Job summary

Fellow in San Francisco, CA is seeking a Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate the device-to-cloud stack for our kitchen hardware, spanning cloud, IoT, and mobile interfaces.

You will own backend services on AWS, ensure reliability, and drive secure provisioning and OTA updates, collaborating with product and QA to deliver scalable, secure systems that power Everyday Magic in homes worldwide.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, Python, and related libraries.
• Experience designing and operating scalable PostgreSQL systems with replication and tuning.
• API Development using REST and GraphQL.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable backend services on AWS.
• Own database reliability and performance, including PostgreSQL replication, indexing, and backup procedures.
• Implement and manage AWS IoT Core and related services (API Gateway, MQTT, Device Shadow, OTA).
• Define service KPIs, SLIs, and SLOs; build observability through logging, metrics, and traces.
• Own Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD workflows with Terraform or CloudFormation and GitHub Actions/Jenkins.
• Secure provisioning, device authentication, and OTA updates; ensure multi-region readiness.
• Collaborate with software, product, and QA to ship features efficiently.
• Explore payments, AI-assisted analysis, and secure remote device diagnostics when aligning with roadmap.
