Job summary

Yahoo Mail is hiring backend engineers to build and operate distributed systems for anti-spam and delivery. You will craft AI-assisted code, translate requirements into production-ready software, and optimize performance on Unix/Linux in a scalable cloud environment.

You will collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver reliable, secure systems that handle billions of messages daily, while embracing hybrid work options and a culture of learning.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Computer Science or a related field with fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, OS, and networking.
• Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Copilot, Cursor, Codex) with judgment on correctness, security, and maintainability.
• 3+ years of backend-focused software development in Java, Go, or C++ (Java heavy team).
• Solid understanding of cloud concepts: IaaS, PaaS, SaaS.
• Machine learning knowledge with some hands-on AI coding experience.
• Experience with public clouds (GCP or AWS).
• Experience with containers (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes), preferably on GCP.
• Experience building high-performing server apps on Unix/Linux.
• Strong troubleshooting and debugging, including performance tuning.
• Clear communicator who works well under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Build and operate distributed systems for inbound protection, entity reputation, traffic shaping, and message delivery.
• Use AI-assisted development tools as part of daily workflow, validating and refining outputs.
• Translate requirements into correct, readable, testable code and deploy to production.
• Troubleshoot software failures and tune performance across high-throughput services.
• Design and simplify existing components with minimal guidance.
• Review peers' code, provide feedback, and help with estimation.
