Job summary

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences seeks a Backend & AI Platform Engineer to build the backend platform powering automated scientific workflows. You will enable secure data access, orchestrate experiments, and integrate instrument ecosystems to scale the platform and deliver AI-enabled lab operations.

The role requires 7+ years in distributed backend systems, experience with LLM-driven apps, and strong API design, with travel up to 15% as needed. Based in Indianapolis or San Jose.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 7+ years of experience designing, building, and supporting distributed backend systems and APIs.
• Proven experience with event-driven architectures, microservices, and cloud-native apps (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Hands-on experience with LLM-powered applications or multi-agent systems, including orchestration and context management.
• Strong API design expertise and ability to prototype rapidly while delivering production-grade solutions.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop event-driven backend services and APIs connecting laboratory instruments, cloud infrastructure, and AI agents.
• Design scalable data and context management for LLM-powered systems, including retrieval pipelines and tool integration.
• Build and maintain orchestration services coordinating planning, execution, monitoring, and recovery across heterogeneous agents and devices.
• Define data contracts, integration standards, and observability to ensure secure, reliable communications across platform services.
• Prototype and mature AI/agent tech into production capabilities meeting regulated customer requirements.
