Job summary

Austal Usa, LLC in Mobile, AL is seeking a Trades Assistant to support fabrication operations on naval vessels. You will follow directions, complete daily tasks, and maintain clean, organized job sites while training junior workers and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

The role requires at least 6 months of related experience, a valid GMAW B Class Weld Certification for aluminum, and ability to read instructions and perform basic measurements.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 months experience as a Trades Assistant at Austal or 1 year related experience.
• Completion of an Austal approved AIDT training course may be accepted in lieu above listed experience or may be required
• Must pass the GMAW 'B' Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications and approved B Class pre-employment mock weld test
• Performs the approved WPQT's under limited supervision.
• Must be able to perform grinding and joint preparation for NDE and all other visual inspection processes.
• Must be able to demonstrate the safe and effective use of craft related tools and equipment, including but not limited to: millers, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along and chain falls etc.
• The ability to understand directions and follow instructions.
• Must demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for a B Class Welder position.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems that may arise in certain situations.
• Two years of maritime experience

Responsibilities

• Understand directions and follow instructions.
• Complete daily work assignments including signatures for work completion and quality.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
• Perform grinding and joint preparation that meet criteria for NDE and all visual inspection processes.
• Monitor working environment for quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.
• Willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.
• May be assigned to work any shift.
• May be assigned tasks including outside the craft as required.
