Job summary

Austal USA in San Diego is seeking a Trades Assistant to support fabrication operations on shipbuilding projects. You will follow directions, complete daily assignments, and maintain site cleanliness while performing grinding and joint preparation for NDE and visual inspections.

The role requires welding certification readiness, basic math, and maritime experience. You may train others, work flexible shifts, and comply with safety and anti-harassment policies.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 months experience as a Trades Assistant or 1 year related experience in a similar industry
• Completion of an Austal USA approved training course may count toward experience
• Must pass the GMAW Aluminum 'B' Class and/or FCAW Steel 'B' Weld Certification and approved pre-employment weld test
• Performs the approved WPQT's under limited supervision
• Able to perform grinding and gouging of steel welds through various methods and joint preparation for NDE/visual inspections
• Ability to read and write simple correspondence and perform basic arithmetic using the metric system
• Two years of maritime experience
• Ability to work any shift or overtime as required

Responsibilities

• Understand directions and follow instructions.
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including signatures for work completion and quality.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
• Performs grinding and joint preparation meeting NDE criteria and visual inspection processes.
• Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.
• Willing to train lower-skilled workers.
• May be assigned to work any shift.
• May be assigned tasks outside the craft as required.
