Job summary

Metra is seeking a Building and Bridges (B&B) Mechanic Assistant to support construction and maintenance of culverts, sewers, walls, buildings, platforms and related structures across the six-county Metra region. The role requires lifting 60-70 pounds and readiness to work outdoors in all weather.

This union position is housed in the Engineering Department, with opportunities to grow skilled trades capabilities and a stable career path; travel within the six-county area is required.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Construction/Maintenance experience is required.
• Must be able to lift, carry and move equipment and materials weighing up to 60-70 pounds.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.

Responsibilities

• Assist in construction and maintenance of culverts, sewers, walls, buildings, platforms and related structures.
• Perform various maintenance tasks under both indoor and outdoor conditions.
• Support the Engineering Department in monitoring and maintaining assets across the network.

The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra’s fixed assets, including buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance. The department is staffed by more than 700 employees.The Building and Bridges (B&B) Mechanic Assistant ensures proper construction and maintenance of culverts, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water lines, fences and retaining walls, buildings, station platforms, highway grade crossings and general masonry and carpentry to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of trains. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.This is a Union position.
