Our purpose – Opening up a world of opportunity – explains why we exist. Here at HSBC we use our unique expertise, capabilities, breadth and perspectives to open up new kinds of opportunity for our more than 40 million customers. We’re bringing together the people, ideas and capital that nurture progress and growth, helping to create a better world – for our customers, our people, our investors, our communities and the planet we all share.

In compliance with applicable laws, HSBC is committed to employing only those who are authorized to work in the US. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. as HSBC will not engage in immigration sponsorship for this position.

Financial Crime Risk Analysis is a specialist team focused on financial crime. We combine deep financial crime expertise with proactive, rigorous, and data-driven analysis to understand and explain the Bank's exposure to existing and emerging financial crime threats. We draw on internal transaction and customer data, alongside intelligence and open-source research, to build a comprehensive picture of risk. We deliver timely, accurate and actionable insights to a wide range of stakeholders across the Bank, working closely with other teams to enhance the Bank’s financial crime control environment and framework.

What You’ll Do
  • Identify strategic and relevant insights on emerging and crystallized financial crime risks impacting the Bank. These may range from sanctions evasion, professional money laundering, terrorist financing and fraud to the broader geopolitical shifts that shape the risk landscape
  • Translate complex findings into clear, compelling and actionable insights, including written reports, PowerPoint presentations, charts and tables tailored to the audience’s priorities and level of subject-matter knowledge
  • Work with often noisy internal and external datasets, using custom SQL scripts mapped to project-specific risk criteria to uncover patterns and connections. You’ll hone these skills over time, with support from data analysis specialists across the team.
  • Build deep subject matter expertise over time, becoming a trusted source of insight for colleagues across the Bank in your areas of focus
  • Contribute findings to the Bank's shared library of financial crime typologies, helping to strengthen detection capabilities and controls across the organization
  • Forge strong working relationships with colleagues across the team, sharing analytical techniques and lessons learned as part of a small, collaborative group of experts
What We’re Looking For
  • A genuine curiosity about financial crime, illicit finance and the broader geopolitical trends shaping the risk landscape
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn analysis into insights that drive tangible improvements to the Bank’s control framework and risk culture
  • Demonstrable experience of scoping, managing and delivering projects that translate uncertainty, open-ended questions and ambiguous raw data into specific, actionable intelligence insights
  • Familiarity with open-source research, data analysis and visualization tools and techniques
  • A collaborative mindset, with a proven track record of building strong working relationships within and across teams
Qualifications And Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as international relations, political science, finance or law
  • Master's degree an advantage but not essential
  • Relevant professional experience, for example financial institution, government, intelligence, think tanks, law, or a related analytical field
