Job summary

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Valdez District is seeking an Avalanche Technician to monitor avalanche hazards along the Richardson and Copper River Highways, forecast hazards, and coordinate avalanche control operations to keep travelers safe during winter conditions.

You will support year-round highway maintenance at Thompson Pass, operate heavy equipment for snow removal and road maintenance, maintain avalanche and weather records, and

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in explosives handling and disposal.
• OR three years of avalanche control and forecasting.
• Other emergency management related experience may apply.
• Class B CDL with hazmat endorsements OR TWIC may be required at hire.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and forecast avalanche hazards along the Richardson and Copper River Highways and coordinate avalanche control operations.
• Support year-round highway maintenance and operate heavy equipment for snow removal and road maintenance.
• Maintain avalanche and weather records and manage rescue equipment.
• Coordinate road closures with agencies, highway crews, and the public.
