Job summary

The State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is seeking an Avalanche Technician/Safety and Emergency Support Specialist to monitor avalanche hazards, coordinate control operations, and support winter highway maintenance at Thompson Pass, AK.

The role requires experience in avalanche forecasting, emergency management, and a CDL with hazmat endorsements or TWIC. Expect a dynamic field environment with high safety standards and collaboration with partners.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in the handling and disposal of explosives and/or incendiary devices.
• Three years of experience in avalanche control and forecasting.
• Two years of experience related to emergency planning, response, or disaster management.
• Special Note: A Class B CDL with hazmat endorsements OR a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) is required at the time of hire.
• Desirable qualifications include: National Avalanche School certificate or National Ski Patrol Avalanche Instruction certificate; 105mm recoilless rifle certificate; Advanced first aid certificate; Experience with tactical operations or surveillance; Scuba diving certification.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and forecast avalanche hazards along designated highways.
• Recommend and coordinate avalanche control operations.
• Operate heavy equipment for snow removal and road maintenance.
• Maintain avalanche and weather records; manage rescue equipment and explosives inventories.
• Provide avalanche safety education and coordinate road closures and control operations with agencies and the public.
