Job summary

MITRE's Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department seeks a senior professional to provide technical leadership in autonomy and AI across cross-functional teams in Massachusetts. You will evaluate and improve autonomous systems, guide sponsors, and contribute to strategy around high-consequence autonomy applications.

Applicants should have 8+ years in autonomy/AI with a strong degree, familiarity with ROS 2 and Docker, and be prepared for on-site work.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in Autonomy/AI with related degree; 6+ years with MS; or PhD with 3+ years.
• Broad understanding across DoD, DHS, industry, and academia.
• Deep experience in robotics fields such as computer vision or ML.
• Ability to articulate autonomy challenges and constraints clearly.
• Familiarity with ROS 2 and Docker.
• Proven ability to learn new technologies independently.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with sponsors.
• Ability to define work with sponsors even with incomplete requirements.
• Demonstrated leadership; manage schedules and budgets.
• Experience leading autonomy-focused research initiatives.
• Ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance within 12 months.
• U.S. citizen per government eligibility.
• Minimum 3 days on-site.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership on cross-functional teams to improve autonomous systems.
• Maintain knowledge of advances in autonomy and robotics capabilities.
• Evaluate AI/Autonomy solutions and advise sponsors per requirements.
• Lead autonomy-focused research initiatives and roadmap planning.
• Define strategy around high-consequence autonomy applications and testing.
• Work on robotics topics: vision, deep learning, ML, planning, multi-robot systems.
• Develop growth areas for Autonomous Systems (e.g., healthcare robotics).
• Ensure assurance, testing, and societal implications are considered.
