Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Engineer to design, implement, and test estimation, guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for autonomous vehicles and robotic systems. You will develop state estimation, sensor fusion, and trajectory planning, while collaborating with software engineers and domain experts to deploy capabilities across lab, flight, maritime, and field tests.

Qualifications

  • You meet a BS in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, computer engineering, robotics, applied mathematics, physics, or related field.
  • 2+ years of software, algorithm, model, or analysis tool experience.
  • Experience in guidance, navigation, control, estimation, robotics, autonomy, dynamics, or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar tools.
  • Experience analyzing system performance via simulation, testing, or data.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Willingness to travel for lab, flight, and field testing.
  • Active Secret security clearance and U.S. citizenship requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, analyze, and test estimation, guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for autonomous vehicles and robotic systems.
  • Develop and implement control, state estimation, sensor fusion, and trajectory planning algorithms.
  • Model, simulate, and evaluate system performance using MATLAB, Python, and C++ in simulations and tests.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, roboticists, and domain experts to integrate autonomy capabilities.
  • Support laboratory, flight, maritime, and field testing, analyze results, improve robustness.
  • Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and transition of concepts to deployed capabilities.
