Job summary

Atoms is seeking a Robotics Controls Engineer to develop and maintain core control systems for autonomous haul trucks used in mining. You will work on localization, path following, and longitudinal/lateral control, integrating multiple sensor modalities on 200+ ton vehicles.

Collaborating with perception, planning, and hardware teams, you will write production-grade Python/C++ code and contribute to field testing and deployment efforts onsite in San Francisco. Some travel to sites is required.

Qualifications

• BS/MS/PhD in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical or related field required.
• 2+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong foundation in classical control theory (PID, lead/lag).
• Experience with state estimation (Kalman filters, EKF/UKF).
• Python and NumPy/SciPy proficiency.
• Understanding of vehicle dynamics and kinematics.
• Ability to read and debug real-time control code.
• Experience deploying localization and controls on real-world systems.
• Experience with Model Predictive Control (MPC).
• Familiarity with path following (Stanley, Pure Pursuit).
• Background in signal processing and system identification.
• Experience with heavy/off-highway vehicles; CAN bus interfaces.
• ROS or similar robotics middleware; ML for controls problems.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and tune control algorithms for autonomous vehicle systems.
• Build Localization & State Estimation, Longitudinal and Lateral Control.
• Develop state estimation pipelines fusing multiple sensor modalities.
• Analyze system performance through simulation and field testing.
• Debug control issues using logged data and identify root causes.
• Collaborate with perception, planning, and hardware teams to integrate controls.
• Write production-quality Python and C++ code for reliability.
• Travel to customer sites up to 15% for deployments.
• Schedule flexibility during deployments.
