Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks engineering interns to design, build, and test autonomous systems for real-world operations. You will work with a small, interdisciplinary team on software and hardware, including simulation and field deployment, to advance autonomy with AI/ML techniques and robust testing.

Ideal candidates are pursuing STEM degrees with a strong academic record, teamwork, and strong communication.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams with strong communication.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and problem-solve through projects or coursework.
  • Eligible for Interim Secret clearance by start date and Secret clearance later; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and test software and/or hardware for robotic and autonomous systems, including simulation and real-world deployment.
  • Develop autonomy and AI/ML algorithms (perception, navigation, platform behaviors) through prototyping and optimization.
  • Assist testing and debugging of autonomy algorithms in labs, simulations, and field environments.
