Job summary

The University of Iowa is seeking a Physician Assistant in the Department of Anesthesia to perform pre-operative and post-anesthesia assessments for patients scheduled for surgery in the OR at UI Health Care Medical Center. The PA will assist in educating residents, medical students, and nurse anesthetist students, and will participate in perioperative research and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Current NCCPA certification and Iowa licensure/registration as required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize workflow in a fast-paced operating room.

Responsibilities

• Review patient records including prior anesthetics, surgical and nursing work-up, consultant work-up, and other relevant notes.
• Evaluate patient according to standard anesthetic evaluation.
• Provide postoperative management in the PACU for pain, nausea, hemodynamics, and other conditions.
• Assist with multimodal pain management strategies and regional anesthesia follow-up.
• Participate in development and implementation of standardized perioperative care pathways and quality initiatives.
• Perform further evaluation as directed by the staff physician.
• Assist patient in understanding anesthesia teaching materials and NPO instructions.
• Instruct patient on medications for day of surgery and insulin management.
• Write orders for pre-medication and order diagnostic tests as directed.
• Coordinate with external providers for additional records and consultations.
• Communicate with other services to request further work-up with staff physician.
• Arrange communication of special needs to anesthesia team.
• Gather data for optimizing OR function and efficiency.
• Assist in teaching duties and training of substitutes and SRNA students.
• Establish and maintain professional standards among team members.
