Job summary

The University of Minnesota is hiring a Senior Laborer to support Parking and Transportation Services on the Twin Cities campus. You will perform vehicle detailing, prep, and shop responsibilities as part of daily operations in a team-focused environment.

Work hours are 7:00AM - 3:30PM, with a 1 00% appointment and nonexempt status. Requires a valid Minnesota driver’s license and basic English communication skills. Salary range is competitive for civil-service staff in this region.

Responsibilities

  • 65% Assist technicians in the shop: Auto detailing; Prep new vehicles for service and prep old vehicles for disposal.
  • 20% Shop Runner: Pick up parts at dealers or parts stores; Deliver vehicles to dealers for warranty work.

Background

Parking and Transportation Services is a self-supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet, streets, walkways and way-finding. PTS supports alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle and promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool or take the bus. The department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and administers the fuel credit card, vehicle insurance and safety, and employee driver training programs.

Facilitating safe and effective integrated transportation systems that provide services for pedestrians, bicycles, transit and vehicles.

Responsibilities

65% Assist technicians in the shop

  • Auto detailing
    • Prep new vehicles for service and prep old vehicles for disposal
  • Tow vehicles to or from offsite locations as needed
  • Use Fleet Management software to track job time and parts used.

20% Shop Runner

  • Pick up parts at dealers or parts stores
  • Deliver vehicles to dealers for warranty work

10% Shop clean up

  • Keep the shop organized and clean
  • Receive stock/parts orders
  • Maintain two University fuel islands

5% Miscellaneous tasks as assigned

  • Assist with miscellaneous projects and tasks as they arise
Work Environment

Work is performed in both a shop and field environment. This position may be exposed to hazardous conditions where hearing and visual protection may be required. Working hours are 7:00AM - 3:30PM Monday through Friday.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the assignment.
  • 6 months of general laborer experience.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • A valid Minnesota Driver's License (D Class).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of automotive background.
  • Knowledge of automotive systems and equipment, preventative maintenance principles and practices, service delivery methods, and utilization principles.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance systems and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to prioritize work in a multi-tasking environment.
  • A valid Minnesota Driver's License (A or B Class)
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $23.75 to $26.62 a hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 1 00% Appointment
