Responsibilities
30% Respond to Machine and other Equipment Issues

  • Perform daily tours of staffed parking facilities.
  • Check operation of all equipment onsite including automated pay machines.
  • Respond to any reports and troubleshoot potential causes of malfunctions.
  • Report malfunctions and issues that cannot be solved.
  • Ensure that adequate supplies and tickets are available for their area's facilities.
  • Greet and talk with each attendant on site while conducting tours to assess performance, check paperwork, answer questions, and promote communication.
  • Perform on-the-spot training or coaching as necessary.
  • Monitors video system for issues and maintenance concerns in University parking facilities.

20% Supervise parking attendants

  • Schedule the hours of work for parking attendants in their area.
  • Alter assignments to maintain appropriate coverage on a day-to-day basis to attend to service needs.
  • Interview and train parking attendants.
  • Orient, train, coach, discipline, and evaluate staff in the operation of parking facilities.
  • Administer University and departmental policies.
  • Maintain personnel incident log for student parking attendants.
  • Recommend changes to the staffing plan.
  • Follow department protocol for dealing with emergencies including notification of attendants and closeout procedures.

20% Determine parking usage in facilities based on supply and demand

  • Enforce policies and procedures.
  • Utilize departmental PARCS (Parking Access Revenue Control System) to monitor space, adjust counts and provide usable space to all users of parking facilities.
  • Inform the Assistant Director of Operations of problems, complaints, and unusual occurrences in the area.
  • Operate and effectively use the department's technology including scheduler, electronic payroll and parking access control systems, Windows operating system, Google Drive, MS Office (Word and Excel), and other systems.

20% Provide customer service to patrons utilizing parking facilities

  • Deal effectively with difficult customers to resolve problems.
  • Work to find the best parking solution for customers or direct them to appropriate personnel or resources.
  • Look for ways to improve efficiency and service levels.
  • Attend training sessions or seminars to improve performance.
  • Report any recommendations for changes in policies and/or operating procedures to the Assistant Director of Operations.
  • Serve as back up to customer service and call center functions as needed.
  • Attend meetings and follow up with customer departments regarding parking needs.

10% Assist with other parking functions as needed
Work Environment: Work is performed in both an office and field environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS with at least 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six years; position involves comparing, verifying and reconciling data to help the department achieve overall objectives.
  • Two years of experience in the field operations (security, event management, parking, or related) with at least one-year involving supervision.
  • A valid U.S. driver's license is required.

  • Ability to identify departmental priorities and make decisions to ensure work efforts and resources are employed appropriately.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse customer base and work force.
  • Experience leading effectively and working collaboratively with staff in a unionized setting.

  • Highly developed conflict management, negotiation and problem resolution skills.
  • Proven written, verbal, interpersonal and persuasion skills.

  • Knowledge of large-scale parking operations principles and practices; knowledge of parking systems including parking access control software and hardware, AS400 systems, and related systems is desirable.
  • Well-developed computer proficiency in effectively using MS Office Suite software for work initiatives.
  • Skill in using computerized scheduling software to track personnel.
About the Department

Parking and Transportation Services is a self-supporting unit of the University of Minnesota within Auxiliary Services. The department is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of reliable and efficient transportation services on the Twin Cities campus including transit, parking, fleet, streets, walkways and way-finding. PTS supports alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle and promotes programs to encourage the University community to walk, bike, carpool, or take the bus. The department handles compliance documentation for all University vehicles or licensed equipment and administers the fuel credit card, vehicle insurance and safety, and employee driver training programs.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.00 to $29.00 a hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
