Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking an Automation (Instrumentation & Controls) Engineer to join our Chicago office in 2027. You’ll work with a dynamic team on projects across public, federal, and industrial sectors.

The role involves designing instrumentation and control systems, performing 3D/4D drafting, and contributing to testing and startup activities. A degree in engineering and travel are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Experience with instrumentation and controls concepts is preferred.
• Travel up to 10% may be required.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, creates basic instrumentation, controls and related systems designs using 3D and 4D drafting programs.
• Reviews simple component level shop drawings.
• Creates basic human–machine interface (HMI) designs, PLCs, reports, etc.
• Assists with testing and startup of instrumentation, controls and related systems.
