Job summary

American Axle & Manufacturing Inc. is seeking a Controls Engineer in Detroit, MI to design, implement, and optimize automation and control systems for smart manufacturing facilities.

You will work with PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and data platforms to improve performance and reliability. You’ll collaborate across engineering teams, mentor early-career engineers, and stay current with emerging automation technologies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field; 1–3 years of hands-on experience.
• Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs.
• Experience programming and supporting FANUC robots using Roboguide.
• Knowledge of Python, C#, SQL, or similar programming languages.
• Experience with machine vision systems and automation technologies.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical.
• Interest or experience in deep learning, AI, and data analytics.
• Exposure to 3D modeling software (NX preferred).

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement automation and controls solutions that improve manufacturing performance and efficiency.
• Program, troubleshoot, and enhance PLCs, robots, vision systems, and data collection platforms.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and plant operations to deliver innovative solutions.
• Present project updates and technical concepts to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Mentor interns, co-ops, and early-career engineers while continuing to expand your own skills.
• Support manufacturing facilities and automation teams as new technologies are implemented.
• Analyze existing processes and use data-driven insights to optimize operations.
