Job summary

IFF in Beloit, Wisconsin seeks an Automation and Process Control Engineer to design, implement and optimize DCS/PLC control systems for safe and efficient manufacturing. You will develop control strategies, support site automation, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive improvements across processes and equipment.

You will troubleshoot systems, participate in investigations, and provide on-site technical support as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline.
• 3-5 years of experience in process control, automation, or manufacturing systems.
• Experience reading P&ID diagrams and control drawings.
• Knowledge of Process Safety Management programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Design, configure, test, and commission process control systems (DCS, PLC) for safe, efficient operations.
• Develop and optimize control strategies (including PID loops) to improve stability and performance.
• Support site automation, instrumentation, and control tech across processes.
• Lead automation projects, including upgrades, commissioning, startup activities and lifecycle management.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to implement improvements.
• Maintain HMIs and visualization tools to enhance operator effectiveness.
• Troubleshoot control systems and networks; participate in root cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Provide occasional off-hours support for critical automation issues.

Where You’ll Make a Difference

• Design, configure, test, and commission process control systems, including Distributed Control Systems and Programmable Logic Controllers, to support safe and efficient manufacturing operations.
• Develop, implement, and optimize control strategies, including Proportional-Integral-Derivative control loops, to improve process stability, reliability, and performance.
• Support site automation systems, instrumentation, and control technologies while building technical expertise across manufacturing processes.
• Contribute to automation, modernization, and capital improvement projects, including system upgrades, commissioning, startup activities, and lifecycle management.
• Partner with manufacturing, operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify process improvement opportunities and implement automation solutions.
• Maintain and enhance human-machine interface systems, operator graphics, and related visualization tools to improve operational effectiveness.
• Troubleshoot automation infrastructure, including control systems, data historians, instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.
• Participate in investigations related to automation and control system events, supporting root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
• Provide technical support for manufacturing operations and participate in occasional off-hours support for critical automation and process control issues.

What Makes You the Right Fit

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 3-5 years of experience supporting industrial process control, automation, or manufacturing systems within a process manufacturing environment.
• Experience developing or modifying control logic, functional specifications, control narratives, alarm strategies, and system configurations.
• Experience supporting chemical, biotechnology, food, pharmaceutical, or other process manufacturing operations utilizing continuous or batch processes.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, control logic diagrams, and electrical drawings.
• Working knowledge of Process Safety Management programs, including Process Hazard Analysis and Management of Change processes.
• Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to a variety of audiences.

How Would You Stand Out?

• Experience with Emerson DeltaV or similar platforms such as Honeywell Experion or Yokogawa CENTUM.
• Exposure to Distributed Control Systems, batch automation systems, or advanced process control applications through projects or manufacturing support roles.
• Familiarity with data historians, manufacturing analytics tools, continuous improvement methodologies, or structured problem-solving techniques.
