Job summary

Hamilton Township School District in Mercer County is seeking an experienced maintenance mechanic to maintain and repair district heavy equipment, buses, and fleet vehicles. You will service gasoline and diesel engines, perform small engine repairs, and work with computerized manuals and work order systems.

The role requires a Technical Institute background, 3–5 years in automotive maintenance, and a valid NJ CDL Class B license.

Qualifications

• Graduate of Technical Institute with 3 years experience or 5 years in automotive maintenance
• Experience in general mechanic work for gasoline/diesel engines (cars, vans, trucks, buses)
• Ability to perform small engine repairs (lawnmowers, weed whackers, leaf blowers, snow plows)
• Familiar with new vehicle electronic systems
• OSHA 30 General Industry Certified (or eligible within 90 days)
• Valid NJ CDL Class B license and clean driving record
• Must have own hand tools and ability to lift 50 lbs
• Ability to work in a school setting and pass background checks
• Proficiency with computerized manuals and work order programs

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repair of district heavy equipment and small engines
• Ensure safety and NJMVC compliance of the district's vehicles
• Maintain and repair bus and maintenance vehicles as required
• Operate and troubleshoot computerized work order systems
• Communicate effectively with staff and supervisors

Ensures the safety and NJMVC compliance of the district's school bus and maintenance vehicles, performing necessary repairs as required. Perform the maintenance and repair of district heavy equipment and small engines.

Requirements:

• Graduate of Technical Institute with 3 years experience or 5 years of experience in the automotive maintenance industry
• Experience in general mechanic work involving all phases of vehicle maintenance and repairs pertaining to gasoline and diesel engines of:
  • cars,
  • vans
  • trucks
  • buses
• Ability to perform small engine repairs on equipment such as:
  • lawnmowers
  • weed whackers,
  • leaf blowers
  • snow plows
• Familiar with new vehicle electronic systems
• ASE certification preferred
• OSHA 30 General Industry Certified (or eligible within ninety days of first date of employment)
• Valid NJ Commercial Drivers License Class "B"
• Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record
• Ability to lift 50 lbs
• Must have own hand tools
• Ability to work in a school setting
• Good listening, communication and interpersonal skills

Effective: 2026-2027 School Year
Salary: Unaffiliated $60,000 to $70,000

In addition to the base salary, eligible employees receive a comprehensive benefits package:
including medical/vision, prescription and dental insurance, and paid time off. Will be entered into the appropriate NJ Pension Program.
