Job summary

The Archdiocese of San Antonio is seeking a Student Support Assistant – Autism Services to provide individualized support to students with autism within a Catholic school setting. The role collaborates with teachers, families, and other professionals to help students access academic, social, behavioral, and spiritual life.

Responsibilities include implementing strategies, routines, and interventions to promote independence, self-regulation, and positive relationships while maintaining dignity

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; further education in special education or related field preferred.
• Experience with children or adolescents with autism, developmental differences, or behavioral needs preferred.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, families, and other professionals.
• Patience, compassion, flexibility, and calmness in challenging situations.
• Commitment to the mission of Catholic education.
• Successful background checks and Safe Environment training required.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized support to students with autism as directed by the classroom teacher and/or administrator.
• Assist students in accessing classroom instruction, assignments, activities, and assessments.
• Support students in developing routines and expectations within the classroom.
• Assist with transitions between classrooms, activities, locations, and school routines.
• Promote independence and self-advocacy without creating dependence on adults.
• Reinforce appropriate communication, social interaction, and peer relationships.
• Support self-regulation and coping strategies for students.
• Provide support during periods of frustration or challenging behavior using school-approved strategies.
• Assist with behavioral and instructional strategies as directed by staff.
• Assist students with visual schedules, organizational tools, and independence supports.
• Provide prompting and gradually reduce assistance as independence develops.
• Support students during arrivals, dismissals, lunches, recess, and other activities.
• Assist with personal care, health, and safety needs when required.
• Monitor student safety and communicate concerns to staff.
• Encourage participation in academic, social, and spiritual life of the school community.
