Job summary

Gersh Autism seeks a compassionate Behavior Technician (Paraprofessional) to support students in Hempstead, NY. You will work directly with students, assisting with IEPs and BIPs to help them reach individualized goals.

You will provide one-on-one and small-group support, aiding communication, social interaction, and self-management, while collaborating with teachers and behavior analysts to foster a structured learning environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
• Experience with children, especially those with autism, is a plus but not required.
• A passion for supporting students with autism and other developmental disabilities.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain patient, empathetic, and flexible in various situations.
• Willingness to take a course and complete testing to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) within a specified timeframe.

Responsibilities

• Assist the classroom teacher with IEPs and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with autism.
• Provide one-on-one and small group support to students, encouraging their development.
• Help students with daily tasks, including communication, social interaction, and self-management skills.
• Prepare students and materials for activities and transitions.
• Support students during classroom activities, field trips, and events.
• Apply strategies from behavior intervention plans to promote self-regulation for learning.
• Collect and document data on student performance, behavior, and progress toward goals.
• Collaborate with teachers and behavioral specialists to maintain a positive learning environment.
• Communicate progress and challenges to staff.
• Participate in daily training with behavioral analysts.
