Job summary

The University of North Carolina Charlotte’s Student Centers seeks an Audio-Visual Services Coordinator to support the daily operations of AV services for the Student Union, Cone University Center, and related venues. You will train and supervise student staff, manage equipment needs, and contribute to safety and event quality across afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Work Schedule

Flexible schedule based on operational event needs, focused on afternoons, evenings, and weekends, Tuesday - Saturday. Typical shift times are between 12:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and adjust as required based on event needs.
Hours for this position vary based on the needs of the events and unit operations and primarily include afternoons, nights, and weekends and indoor and outdoor environments. This position can be eligible for shift premium pay when more than half of the scheduled working hours occur between 4:00 PM and 8:00 AM on a regular recurring basis. Shift premium pay is 10% of the regular hourly salary rate.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Audio-Visual Services Coordinator is an integral part of the daily operation of the Student Centers. This position is responsible for assisting the technical and audio-visual services program, including technical and non-technical equipment, that encompasses the Student Union, Cone University Center, and 49th Acre Tailgate Pavilion, as well as contracted special events in various campus locations, including outdoor locations.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of A/V and Technical Services, this position will train, manage, and assign a student staff dedicated to the Audio Visual operations, as part of the larger department student employee team, ensuring adequate coverage and high-end customer service. The Coordinator will also assist in inventory management, preventative maintenance planning, and aid in the development of purchasing lists. Works events and set‑ups as requested. Serves as a vital member of the Student Centers Team – collaborating with other team members to provide an outstanding client experience at all times, as well as administering special projects as needed.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.   • Actively participates and assists the Assistant Director, A/V & Tech Services in the management of the audio-visual services program for the Student Centers.
  • Serve as an audio‑visual staff member on site for major and/or special events as determined by the supervisor, with a focus on evening and weekend activities (e.g., Chancellor‑related events, Homecoming, etc.).
  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director, A/V & Tech Services, hire, train, schedule, and manage the Audio Visual Technician student staff.
Other Work Responsibilities
  • With department leadership, provide input for an equipment renewal and replacement plan as well as a facility condition assessment tool to ensure adequate space planning for future needs
  • Serve as part of the larger Student Centers Operations Team, maintaining excellent facility operation practices and customer service at all times.
  • Fill in schedule gaps as required if students are not available to ensure all events have techs assigned.
  • Oversee event and equipment setups as assigned by supervisor, ensuring all proper safety and risk management policies and procedures are followed.
  • With other department supervisors, participate in all aspects of the department’s Student Employee Experience Program.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, indoors and outdoors, and a flexible schedule.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the Student Centers.
  • As an “Essential” position, report to the Student Centers to assist during inclement weather for all operational needs, including additional responsibilities related to providing events and activities during closure.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Technology and/or audio‑visual experience in a student center/student union or other higher education setting.
  • Ability to advise, train, and supervise both staff and students.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of a University Center and/or Student Union.
  • Strong organizational, relationship‑building, and communication skills.
