Job summary

University of Virginia is seeking an Audio Visual (AV) Assistant to provide technical support and operate AV equipment for events in the Division of Student Affairs.

You will set up, run, and break down microphones, sound systems, projectors, and video conferencing gear across multiple spaces, reporting to the AV Manager. Strong customer service, reliability, and teamwork are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

  • Current UVA student enrolled in at least 12 credits.

  • AV/IT experience is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and respond to radio calls, service tickets, phone calls, emails for AV support.
  • Respond promptly and notify supervisor when issues cannot be resolved.
  • Support other AV Assistants with complex equipment problems.
  • Identify issues and communicate to the AV Manager via Teams or reporting tools.
  • Set up, operate, and breakdown AV equipment in designated spaces and events.
  • Complete training on projectors, sound, mic, control systems and lighting.
  • Meet with organizers upon arrival to ensure tech needs are met.
  • Provide projection and sound services for Newcomb Theater and spaces.
  • Communicate with staff to keep workflow efficient.
  • Visit equipment weekly to verify operability.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings and staff meetings.
  • Follow University policies on AV usage.

Job description

The Audio Visual (AV) Assistants’ primary responsibility is to provide audio visual services and technological support for many spaces and events managed through the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Virginia by its Event Managment Office. AV Assistants respond promptly to requests for technical support for events and activities in these spaces and troubleshoot issues and complications as they arise. AV Assistants also are responsible for the setup, operation, and breakdown of equipment as needed. Examples include items such as microphones, sound systems, projectors, screens, video conferencing equipment, lighting equipment, etc. AV Assistants provide full-service support in the operation of movie projection in the Newcomb Theater and equipment in the Newcomb Ballroom. AV Assistants work directly with and take direction from the Audio-Visual Manager, AV Support Technician, and other professional staff.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and answer radio calls, service tickets, phone calls, emails, etc. that request technical AV support.
  • Respond to requests for AV support in a timely manner. Notify the AV Manager and/or AV Support Technician or other professional staff when unable to resolve a problem or when equipment needs repair service.
  • Support other AV Assistants when there are complex issues or problems with equipment.
  • Identify equipment issues and communicate them to the AV Manager and AV Support Technician via Microsoft Teams or other reporting mechanisms.
  • Perform setup, operation, and breakdown of AV equipment in Newcomb Hall, satellite spaces, the 1515 Building, and other spaces or other events as assigned by the AV Manager and/or AV Support Technician.
  • Complete all required training to become familiar with projectors, sound systems, microphones, AV control systems, video conferencing, lighting equipment other AV resources, and other training as assigned by supervisor(s).
  • When pre-arranged, meet with organizers upon arrival at their event to ensure technology needs are met.
  • Provide movie projection and sound services for Newcomb Theater and other Student Affairs managed spaces (including some outdoor locations).
  • Communicate frequently with and take direction from professional staff to ensure workflow is efficient.
  • Visit all AV equipment on a minimum of a weekly basis to verify it is operational.
  • Be responsible for all work shifts assigned and willing to cover other shifts as needed to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Attend all mandatory training and staff meetings.
  • Learn and abide by all University policies, including use of AV and any other institutional technology at the University.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate or graduate full-time students enrolled in at least 12 credits.
  • Must remain in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • AV and/or IT experience is a plus but not required.
  • Having a U.S. driver’s license is recommended, but not required.
  • Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical duties (i.e., lifting and setting up equipment up to 35 lbs.).
  • Excellent customer service skills and professional work habits.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Dependable, responsible, and trustworthy.
  • Organized and able to multi-task.
  • Ability to act as a team member.

Pay: Hiring Rate $14.53/hour

Hours: Shifts are regularly scheduled between 7:00 a.m.to 12:00 a.m., Monday – Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Sundays.

Hours Per Week: Up to 20 hours per week

Duration: 2026-2027 academic year. Employment ends May8, 2027.Workers in good standing may be offered the opportunity toreturnfor upcoming semesters.
