Job summary

The Hill is seeking an Audience Engagement Editor to connect our journalism to national audiences. The role bridges editing and audience teams to improve cohesion, and involves guiding word choice and headlines for broader reach.

You will edit, assign stories, and craft social media messages, with video integration valued. Washington, D.C. preferred; other time zones possible. Nights and weekends required.

Qualifications

• Fast, accurate writing with attention to detail.
• Strong critical thinking; ability to spot errors and improve copy.
• Experience writing, editing and publishing in a fast-paced newsroom.
• Coaching reporters; developing editors' skills.
• Ability to drive audience growth across multiple stakeholder groups.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications; newsroom experience.
• Excellent communicator; works well in a team.
• Experience posting on social and creating video content; brand voice consistency.
• Familiarity with traffic and engagement software (e.g., Chartbeat, GA).

Responsibilities

• Edit copy, assign stories, and write social media messages.
• Incorporate video into products when possible.
• Post breaking news across social, email, and app alerts.
• Lead in breaking news and identify trends early.
• Craft concise, SEO-friendly headlines and stubs.
• Guide newsroom on social trends and platform growth.
