The Attorney, LSP provides aviation-related legal consultation, guidance, and support to AOPA members and staff. The ideal candidate has expertise in FAA compliance and enforcement, aircraft transactions, aviation tax matters, and relevant litigation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provide initial legal consultations to LSP participants, primarily via telephone, regarding a wide range of aviation-related legal matters.

Advise on legal issues including but not limited to:

FAA certificate enforcement actions and civil penalties,

Aircraft transactions and leases,

Hangar and ground leases,

Sales and use tax, and

FAA, DOT, and IRS compliance and litigation.

Support and guide AOPA staff and LSP panel attorneys on aviation law issues.

Develop and contribute aviation-related legal content for AOPA publications and media.

Prepare and deliver educational seminars for members, staff, and panel attorneys.

Conduct legal research and analysis in support of LSP operations and broader AOPA legal initiatives.

Represent AOPA and LSP at aviation industry events, conferences, and regional fly-ins.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.

Minimum of three (3) years of relevant legal experience.

Active member in good standing of the bar of a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to conduct client consultations effectively.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Admission to the Maryland Bar.

Background in aviation law, policy, or operations.

Experience with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) legal issues.

Familiarity with legal service plans or legal insurance programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position works in an office setting.

Typical working hours are 8:30 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with a one-hour lunch break.

Generally, a climate-controlled environment with occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when attending aviation related events, including exposure to higher altitudes and confined spaces if in a general aviation aircraft.

This position requires some travel, up to 10% of the time, to various general aviation or industry-related events. Travel is by aircraft (general aviation and commercial) and by road or public transit.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands of this position are typical of a standard office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to:

Sit for extended periods while working at a computer or attending meetings.

Use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.

Communicate effectively via email, phone, and in-person, which requires clear speech, hearing, and vision.

Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 15 pounds, such as boxes of materials or equipment.

Occasionally stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms during the course of normal office activities.

The salary range for this position is: $85,000 - $97,000, depending on education and experience.

This position is remote eligible. Candidates may reside in any of the 50 states except the following:
