Rowland Unified School District is seeking an Attendance and Intervention Specialist to coordinate district-wide attendance strategies, conduct outreach, provide interventions for chronically absent students, and support the SARB process.
This bilingual (Spanish) position requires strong knowledge of California attendance laws, MTSS, and data reporting; work with schools, families, and community partners to keep students on track toward graduation.
There is one (1) immediate vacancy for this classification, eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days per week, eleven (11) months a year. Tentative hours are 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Under the general direction of the Director, Student Services, or designee, the Attendance and Intervention Specialist coordinates and implements District-wide attendance improvement strategies; conducts student and family outreach; provides direct intervention services for chronically absent students; participates in the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) process; and assists in monitoring District-wide attendance data and accountability reporting. The incumbent works collaboratively with site administrators, counselors, teachers, attendance clerks, community agencies, and families to identify barriers to attendance and implement multi-tiered intervention plans with the goal of ensuring all students attend school regularly, meet graduation requirements, and succeed academically.
The Attendance and Intervention Specialist is distinguished from other student services classifications by its primary focus on attendance data monitoring, chronic absenteeism intervention, and attendance accountability compliance. Unlike a general Student Services Technician or Community Liaison, this classification requires working knowledge of California Education Code provisions governing attendance and truancy, the SARB process, and multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) frameworks as they apply to attendance improvement. The incumbent operates with significant independence, interfaces regularly with students, families, school sites, and external agencies, and is expected to track and report outcome data aligned to LCAP and state accountability indicators. An employee in this class exercises judgment in identifying appropriate intervention strategies, coordinating referrals, and supporting site and District accountability efforts with minimal day-to-day supervision.
Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. An Associate's degree or higher in social work, psychology, education, sociology, or a related field is preferred. Up to two years of the required experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
Three (3) years of recent, full-time experience in a public school setting working directly with students, families, and community agencies in attendance, student welfare, counseling support, or a closely related student services function. Note: Recent experience is defined as experience obtained within the last five years.

A valid, Class C California driver's license, a good driving record, and use of a private vehicle are required and must be maintained during employment. First Aid/CPR certification is required within six (6) months of appointment. The ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish in addition to English is highly desirable.
Employees in this classification work both inside and outside, with frequent travel between school sites and the community. The position involves direct contact with students, families, and the public; frequent interruptions and emotionally demanding interactions; and may require occasional evening or weekend hours to meet program needs.
Employees in this classification sit, stand, walk, bend, and stoop; lift and carry up to 25 pounds; possess manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment; speak clearly; hear normal conversation; and drive a vehicle. New employees are normally placed at Step A of the appropriate salary range for this classification. If the hiring authority requests advanced salary step placement to the Personnel Director, the new employee's eligibility will be determined in accordance with Personnel Commission Rule and Regulation 17.2.1. The Personnel Commission shall have final approval on any advanced salary step placement requests. Contact the Personnel Commission office for further information if you are hired. Advanced salary placement is only available to employees upon their initial hire.
Candidates who pass all hurdles of the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list in rank order based on final scores including any veteran's / seniority credit. The top three ranks of eligibles who are ready and willing to accept the position shall be referred to the hiring administrator for interview. The eligibility list will be established for six (6) months. All new employees are subject to passing a physical examination, tuberculosis test, background review and must provide satisfactory evidence of authorization to work in the United States. Employment start date is contingent upon fingerprinting and criminal background clearance.
In accordance with Education Code 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months or 130 working days of paid service, whichever is longer. No employee shall attain permanent status in the classified service until s/he has completed a probationary period in a class. An employee may be released at any time during the probationary period.
New employees will be charged a processing fee (approximately $64) for the cost of fingerprinting. This fee must be paid at the time of processing appointment, with a MONEY ORDER ONLY, payable to RUSD.
For entry level classes, veterans with thirty (30) days or more of active service (during a time of war or national emergency) who obtain a passing score shall be allowed an additional credit of five (5) points and disabled veterans receive ten (10) additional points. Entry-level positions are defined as all positions within the classified service when the eligible is first employed by the District, except for positions designated management or senior management. Veterans must supply a copy of their Form DD214 along with their application in order to receive such credit. Veterans credit can only be applied upon initial hire.
Employees with one (1) to three (3) years of service earn vacation at the rate of one (1) day for each month in paid status for a maximum of 12 vacation days per year. The number of vacation days earned progressively increases as provided in the RUSD-CSEA Agreement, Appendix A. Part-time employees earn vacation benefits prorated on the average number of hours worked per day per month in their regular assignments.
For twelve month employees, fifteen (15) paid holidays are earned each year and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year.
One (1) day of sick leave is earned for each full month of service which may be accumulated from year to year. Employees who transfer from another California school district, including a county superintendent of schools office, who have accrued sick leave may transfer it to this District.
Employees whose regular work assignment is thirty (30) hours or more per week are eligible to participate in the District's insurance program which consists of medical, dental, vision, life insurance and income protection.
The District provides eligible employees major medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
Beginning the 2022-23 school year, all permanent employees who have an earned Bachelor’s or Master’s degree beyond the requirements for their position are eligible for a stipend.
Once a transcript is submitted and verified by the Human Resources division, unit members will be eligible for one stipend based on the highest degree earned. Stipend amounts will be divided into 10 monthly payments, September - June. The stipend amount will be prorated for any midyear degrees conferred in the month the transcript was submitted to and verified by the Human resources Department.
Employees who work 20 hours or more per week will be enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
