Job Description
Position Summary

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for managing a comprehensive athletic training program for high school and middle school athletics. The Athletic Trainer will practice within the parameters of Massachusetts licensure and in accordance with applicable professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

The Athletic Trainer will provide medical care, injury prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning services to student-athletes. Reporting to the Athletic Director the athletic trainer collaboration with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, school health services, physicians, and athletic department personnel to promote the health, safety, and well-being of all student-athletes.

The duties and responsibilities outlined below are not intended to be all-inclusive. The Athletic Director may modify or assign additional duties as necessary to meet the needs of the school and its athletic programs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an effective athletic training program for high school and middle school athletic programs.
  • Provide first aid, injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning services to student-athletes.
  • Determine when physician evaluation or other appropriate medical referral is necessary and facilitate referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide athletic training coverage for home athletic contests and practices throughout the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons.
  • Attend postseason and other home-hosted athletic contests as directed by the Athletic Director.
  • Collaborate with school health services regarding the medical clearance and return-to-play status of injured student-athletes.
  • Maintain regular communication with team physicians and other healthcare providers regarding athletic injuries, treatment plans, rehabilitation, and return-to-play recommendations.
  • Assist coaching staff in evaluating and implementing sport-specific conditioning, injury-prevention, and training programs.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and efficient athletic training room.
  • Communicate appropriately with parents/guardians regarding the care, treatment, rehabilitation, and status of their student-athlete.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation, reports, and records related to athletic injuries, illnesses, and incidents.
  • Maintain accurate daily treatment and injury logs.
  • Oversee the ordering, organization, and inventory of athletic training supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and submit an annual budget for athletic training supplies and equipment to the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure that each athletic team is equipped with appropriate medical kits and AEDs.
  • Coordinate the distribution and return of AEDs by maintaining accurate sign-out and return documentation.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Athletic Director regarding the maintenance, inspection, servicing, and readiness of AEDs.
  • Assist with the selection, fitting, and appropriate use of protective equipment, including braces, pads, and other supportive devices.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and implement appropriate safety measures to minimize risks to student-athletes.
  • Educate and advise coaching staff regarding athletic health and safety practices.
  • Share relevant professional literature, resources, and current best practices in athletic training with coaching staff and appropriate school personnel.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and skills through continuing education and adherence to current standards of athletic training practice.
  • Perform other duties related to athletic health and safety as assigned by the Athletic Director.
Primary Function

Provide comprehensive athletic training coverage and healthcare services for high school and middle school athletic programs.

Terms of Employment

The Athletic Trainer will work 209 days according to a weekly schedule established by the Athletic Director. The schedule will vary based on the athletic season, practice schedules, competitions, postseason activities, and the needs of the athletic programs. The Athletic Trainer is expected to be present at home athletic practices and contests and at other postseason or home-hosted events as directed by the Athletic Director.

Evaluation

The Athletic Trainer will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director in accordance with applicable local, state, and school district policies, laws, and regulations.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or a related field; master's degree preferred.
  • Current professional athletic training certification.
  • Current Massachusetts athletic training licensure.
  • Maintain all required continuing education and professional certification requirements.
  • Current CPR/AED and Emergency Cardiac Care certification.
  • Knowledge of current athletic training standards, injury prevention practices, emergency care, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, healthcare providers, school health personnel, and administrators.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, practices, competitions, and postseason events as required by the athletic schedule.
