Job summary

Bentley University in Waltham, MA seeks a Grounds Maintenance Technician to prepare athletic fields and tennis courts for events and summer programs. You will manage mowing, irrigation, field marking, and general grounds care with a range of equipment.

Job Description Summary

The physical demands of this position range from LIGHT to MEDIUM-HEAVY. This position involves athletic field and tennis courtpreparation and maintenance procedures including: field and surfacemarkings, field grooming, lawn mowing, trimming, edging, seedingand fertilization, irrigation control, surface and bleacherclean-up, and trash removal. These are completed in accordance withall applicable OSHA regulations and established schedules andprocedures at Bentley University.

Standing, walking, lifting, carrying and reaching are performed on afrequent to constant basis. Bending, pushing, pulling, climbing,kneeling and twisting are performed on an occasional to frequentbasis. The heaviest physical demands are required during handlingof furniture, heavier equipment, paints, fertilizer, and seed bags,etc. These activities require handling of 25-75 pounds of loadresistance on an occasional to frequent basis. Heavier tasks mayrequire the assistance of (2) or more co-workers.

Essential Duties
  1. Prepares and maintains all athletic fields and tennis courtsfor events during the appropriate athletic seasons and summersports camp programs. Maintains the synthetic field; brushes,cleans and marks as needed. Maintains designated landscapeareas.
  2. Works with Athletic coaches to coordinate maintenanceschedules around practices and games.
  3. Maintains all grounds areas such as mowing, weeding, fieldgrooming, seeding, fertilization, trash removal, irrigationcontrol, field marking, and walkway, parking lot, and fieldbleacher clean-up.
  4. Operates mechanized equipment such as mowers, blowers, weedwhackers, rollers, sod cutters, tillers, utility trucks, andtractors.
  5. Controls and regulates all athletic field irrigation systems;selects suitable watering times and adjust as necessary; winterizes(blow out) and repairs the irrigation system for all the athleticfields as needed.
  6. Responsible for care and inventory of all field maintenanceequipment, materials, sprayers, bases, nets, and paints.
  7. Participates in training to keep and acquire knowledge,skills, and abilities to remain current with standard operationalpractices and revised standards.
  8. Properly uses and cares for Bentley tools and equipment.
  9. Provides appropriate support in major campus activitiesincluding but not limited to: snow removal, freshman orientation,open house, opening/closing of school, baccalaureate andpost-baccalaureate commencement.
  10. Responds to emergency call-in situations.
  11. Interacts professionally with members of the Bentleycommunity.
  12. Inputs data into the computerized work order system,recording time and work order information.
Other Duties
  1. Assist Grounds employees in all facets of Facilitiesoperations including, but not limited to, furniture moves,responding to work order requests, and snow removal.
  2. Follows proper clean-up and recycling procedures as well asobserves all safety rules and regulations (including OSHAregulations) while handling and/or caring for Bentley tools andequipment, to avoid injury to self and others.
  3. Reports building damages, malfunctioning equipment, neededmaintenance and/or repairs in assigned work areas.
  4. May be required to assist other trades as directed byFacilities Manager
  5. May provide ice rink maintenance support seasonally.
  6. Performs all other related duties necessary to meetFacilities Management requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. A minimum of 5 years experience and general knowledge in thepreparation and maintenance of athletic fields, includingmeasuring, marking, and grooming required. Must also haveexperience in using the equipment necessary to accomplish thetask.
  2. Must be physically able to perform the essential duties ofthe position as set forth in this Position Content DescriptionDocument.
  3. Must hold, or acquire within one year, a commercialMassachusetts applicator’s pesticide license and hoisting license(10-ft or 500-lbs) 2-A at a minimum.
  4. Must hold, or acquire within 60 days, a DOT card.
  5. Must be able to read, write and interpret documents in theEnglish language, e.g. safety rules, material safety data sheets(MSDS), operating repair, installation and procedure instructionmanuals.
  6. Must be able to effectively interact and communicate withco-workers and supervisors.
  7. Must be available for emergency call-in situations. Overtimemay be required during certain times of the year.
  8. Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United Statesdriver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determinedby Bentley’s insurance carrier. May be required to drive aBentley issued vehicle. Properly uses and cares for Bentleytools, radios and equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Related agricultural degree preferred.
Work Environment
  • May be exposed to seasonal temperature extremes, includingoccasional wet and slippery conditions. Occasionally working nearmoving mechanical parts is required. Close spaces, working atheights, and climbing both ladders and stairs should also beexpected on an occasional to frequent basis. Noise levels may varyfrom moderate to occasionally high depending on the worksituation.

  • Safety glasses with side shields, goggles, latex and workgloves, and hearing protection may all be required depending on thejob task. Bentley uniforms and safety shoes are required to beworn at all times while working (shoes in compliance with ANSI Z-41.1).

Physical Requirements
  1. Ability to squat, kneel and maintain bent postures from 5minutes up to 10 minutes for a continuous duration, on anoccasional to frequent basis.
  2. Ability to walk on level, uneven and inclined surfaces on asustained basis and climb steps up to 24 steps and ladders up to18-ft on an occasional to frequent basis.
  3. Ability to lift up to 25-pounds individually and up to100-pounds with assistance, 0-72 inch height range, on anoccasional to frequent basis.
  4. Ability to carry up to 25-pounds up to 100 yards on anoccasional to frequent basis.
  5. Ability to push and pull against resistances up to 100-poundson an occasional basis.
  6. Ability to extend reach with both arms, from floor level tooverhead, handling up to 25-pounds on an occasional basis.
  7. Ability to manipulate small parts, machine and vehiclecontrols and various hand tools on a frequent basis.
