Job description

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Enterprise Applications, the Business Systems Analyst (BSA) or Senior Business Systems Analyst (Sr. BSA) is a key member of Bentley Information Technology's Data Management and Application Services (DMAS) team. The team supports more than 40 enterprise applications serving all areas of the University, including the Registrar, Advising, Campus Services, Procurement, and Facilities. This position partners with University stakeholders to understand business processes, identify technology solutions, and optimize the use of enterprise applications, including Workday. Working closely with functional users, technical teams, and third-party vendors, the analyst supports the full project lifecycle—from business process analysis and requirements gathering through testing, implementation, reporting, and post-production support. This position may be filled at either the Business Systems Analyst or Senior Business Systems Analyst level based on the selected candidate's education, experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications. While both levels perform the core responsibilities of the role, the Senior Business Systems Analyst is expected to independently lead more complex initiatives, serve as a strategic partner to business stakeholders, and provide advanced business analysis expertise.

Essential Functions
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand business processes, gather and document requirements, evaluate application needs, and identify technology solutions that support departmental and University goals.
  • Analyze business processes, workflows, and data to identify opportunities for operational efficiencies, continuous improvement, and enhanced utilization of enterprise applications.
  • Facilitate or participate in requirements gathering sessions, serving as a liaison between business stakeholders, technical teams, and third-party vendors to ensure successful solution delivery.
  • Develop functional specifications for application enhancements, integrations, customizations, reports, and other technical solutions.
  • Plan, coordinate, and participate in system testing activities, including test case development, execution, defect resolution, and user acceptance testing.
  • Partner with SaaS vendors to troubleshoot issues, evaluate enhancements, and support the ongoing optimization of enterprise applications.
  • Create and maintain business process documentation, workflows, functional documentation, training materials, and user guides.
  • Provide Tier 2 application support by researching issues, documenting findings, coordinating resolutions, and promoting effective system use.
  • Develop, analyze, and deliver reports to support business operations and informed decision-making.
  • Lead or support business analysis activities throughout the project lifecycle—from requirements gathering through implementation and post-production support—based on the scope and complexity of assigned initiatives.
  • Support end-user adoption by providing training, documentation, and guidance on business processes and enterprise applications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Level Expectations

Both the Business Systems Analyst and Senior Business Systems Analyst perform the essential functions described above. The primary distinction between the two levels is the complexity of assignments, degree of independence, and scope of responsibility.

Business Systems Analyst

Performs business analysis activities with general guidance while developing expertise in supported applications and business processes. Supports application implementations, enhancements, testing, documentation, and issue resolution. Collaborates with business partners and technical teams to deliver effective technology solutions.

Senior Business Systems Analyst

Independently leads complex business analysis initiatives and serves as a trusted advisor to functional stakeholders. Provides strategic recommendations for business process improvements and enterprise application optimization. Leads requirements gathering, solution design, testing, and implementation activities for complex initiatives. Builds strong partnerships across business and technical teams and works directly with software vendors to resolve issues and evaluate enhancements. Serves as a subject matter expert for assigned applications and business processes and may provide guidance or mentorship to other analysts.

Minimum Qualifications - Business Systems Analyst
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in business systems analysis, enterprise application support, or a closely related field.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather business requirements, document processes, and support technology solutions.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and take a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience with Workday is strongly preferred.
Minimum Qualifications - Senior Business Systems Analyst
  • Candidates considered for the Senior Business Systems Analyst level must meet the qualifications above and, in addition, demonstrate:
  • Minimum of five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in business systems analysis, enterprise application support, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex business analysis efforts from requirements gathering through implementation and ongoing support.
  • Experience serving as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders by recommending technology solutions and business process improvements.
  • Advanced skills in facilitating cross-functional meetings, developing functional specifications, and managing multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Experience supporting complex SaaS enterprise applications; Workday Student experience is strongly preferred.
Work Environment

Hybrid office setting with extensive sitting and computer work. Ability to travel around campus for meetings and other work-related events. Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday on-call support may be required.
