Job summary

The Salvation Army in Biloxi, MS is seeking a part-time Recreation staff member to guide and supervise sports activities for youth. You will instruct on fundamentals of multiple sports, foster safety and sportsmanship, and coordinate schedules with other staff.

Responsibilities include supervising children, reporting incidents, and maintaining equipment. A high school diploma or GED and 2 years of coaching experience are required, with a focus on teamwork and communication.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years experience coaching sporting events and working with children or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and collaborate with staff and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct members in fundamentals of football, basketball, baseball, and other sports.
  • Maintain order and promote sportsmanship among participants and communicate with parents about performance and schedules.
  • Supervise children during camps, programs, and activities; monitor playground and field areas.
  • Prepare and submit accident/incident reports to supervisor.
  • Plan and conduct regular team meetings to align on schedules and plans.
  • Maintain and secure sports equipment to ensure long equipment life.

Job Details: Job Location: ALM-Ms Gulf Coast Ray and Joan Kroc Corps - Biloxi, MS 39530, Position Type: Part Time with Benefits 20 or More, Salary Range: $11.54 Hourly, Job Category: Recreation, Schedule/Hours: Part-time – 27.5 hours per week – Monday thru Saturday

This position is responsible for:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Instructs members in the fundamentals of various sports such as football, basketball, baseball, etc.
  • Maintains order and control over members participating in sports; promotes good sportsmanship and practices proper discipline when necessary; maintains open communication with participants’ parents to discuss performance, behavior and schedules.
  • Assists staff as requested, supervises, and monitors children during various camps, programs, and recreational and athletic activities; observes, monitors, and supervises children on the playground.
  • Generates accident and/or incident reports as needed; submits proper documentation to supervisor upon completion.
  • Plans, conducts, and leads team meetings on a regular basis ensuring all team members are aware of sports schedule and plans.
  • Obtains, maintains, and secures sports equipment in compliance with acceptable standards to ensure the long life of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements
  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language
  • Ability to perform duties with a combination of frequent sitting, standing and walking.
  • Ability to participate in a variety of sporting events including throwing and catching a ball, running and jumping.
  • Work is performed in a normal gym or sports field environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU:
  • High School diploma or G.E.D., AND
  • Two years experience coaching sporting events and working with children, OR
  • any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
