Job summary

The City of San Diego seeks an Assistant Department Director for the Water Delivery Branch to lead Water Production, Distribution and Meter Services. This role directs a major municipal utility with extensive pipelines, reservoirs, treatment plants, and thousands of connections, ensuring safe, reliable water service to over 1.3 million residents.

Responsibilities include budget development, regulatory liaison, stakeholder engagement, and guiding a large, diverse workforce toward ongoing

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree as specified; five years of progressively responsible managerial experience in large water or wastewater utilities.
• Experience leading administrative, field operations, technical and engineering staff is preferred.
• Ability to operate effectively in a political environment and manage regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead Water Production, Water Distribution and Water Meter Services divisions.
• Oversee day-to-day operations and annual budget planning and monitoring.
• Represent the department before City bodies and external agencies; negotiate with water agencies.
• Foster accountability, asset management, and high-performing diverse teams.
• Communicate complex technical info clearly using graphs and reports.
