Responsibilities

The Wharton‑Smith Center for Construction at Seminole State College of Florida is seeking a dynamic and innovative full‑time faculty member to teach the construction core courses such as estimating, MEP systems, construction accounting and finance, construction plan reading, BIM and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) technologies. This is a regular full‑time, teaching position on track for continuing contract (tenure). The standard contract length for the available position is:

• 196 days; however, other contract lengths may be available depending on department needs

Assigned campus location may vary based on enrollment. This position is located on‑site at the Heathrow Campus.

Faculty responsibilities will include:

• Project‑based teaching approach and supporting student learning.
• Maintaining the industry‑driven curriculum and the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) accreditation student learning outcome assessments.
• Supporting college policies, procedures, and inclusiveness.
• Participating in department and college activities and serving on committees.
• Engaging with community partners and participating in local humanitarian service‑learning projects.
• Establishing and maintaining relationships with local high schools and university partners.
• Participating in grant writing proposals that relate to the construction industry.
• Attending college wide meetings and training as they apply to the construction, engineering and design departments. Professor will attend graduation ceremonies.
• Interfacing with local construction companies to remain current with workforce needs, to promote internship and mentoring opportunities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plans, organizes, and teaches construction classes as assigned. Develops detailed outlines and syllabi as required foreach class. Project‑based instruction will be incorporated into each respective class.
2. Makes use of professional growth opportunities, including but not limited to the Seminole State Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning.
3. Incorporates teaching strategies relevant to academic discipline that foster student learning, success and retention.
4. Engages students and supports student learning success in and beyond the classroom (i.e., help students to develop and maintain a good work ethic).
5. Works effectively, respectfully and productively with people from all cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
6. Maintains required student hours to provide assistance to students, both individually and in small groups.
7. Advises students in matters relating to academic progress.
8. Works with other faculty in support of curricula improvements as appropriate to promote students’ success and mastery of course and program competencies.
9. Complies with college policies and procedures with required deadlines.
10. Participates in day, evening, and weekend program staffing as required. Assigned campus location may vary due to enrollment (Sanford/Lake Mary, Heathrow or Oviedo campuses). And may require travel between campuses.
11. Participates in committee work as requested.
12. Contributes to collegial and collaborative work environment.
13. Becomes actively involved with the diverse community that the college serves.
14. Works with other college departments to engage community partners that support the College Mission and Vision.
15. Performs all other site and position specific responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Option 1:

1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Building Construction, Construction Management, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Structural) or Architecture.
2. A minimum two years of related professional experience.

Option 2:

1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Business, Business Administration or Project Management AND a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Building Construction, Construction, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or closely related field.
2. A minimum of 6 years of professional construction experience.
3. Current professional license (PE, CGC, RA, or CPBD) registered in any US state or territory or industry recognized professional certification such as Certified Professional Contractor (CPC), Design‑Build Institute of America (DBIA) Certification or Project Management Professional (PMP).

Option 3:

1. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited institution in Construction or related discipline.
2. Previous teaching experience at the college level.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A minimum of three years of direct in-field project management experience in the capacity such as superintendent or project manager and experience in core construction skills such as estimating, scheduling, MEP systems, risk management and project management is preferred.
2. Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited institution in Construction or related discipline.
3. Experience utilizing emerging technology and innovative pedagogy to deliver exceptional teaching and learning such as Hololens, laser scanners, drones and Bluebeam.
4. Previous leadership experience in an educational setting.
5. Desired areas of expertise (in-field or teaching) estimating, scheduling, project management, MEP systems, Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), construction accounting and finance, professional practices/ and proficiency in industry-standard software such as BIM, Revit, Navisworks, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project and PlanGrid.
6. Previous teaching experience at the college level.
7. Familiar with the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) student learning outcomes and standards.
8. Previous teaching experience with online learning modality and technology (i.e. distance learning).
9. Demonstrates an understanding of the learning-centered approach to teaching and project-based learning.
10. Experience in writing grant proposals and/or participation in grant activities.

Pay Benefits and Work Schedule

The starting salary is $46,697 to $68,082 commensurate with related work experience and education in accordance with the Salary Schedule in Article 26 of the UFF Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is a 196-day contract position.

This position is eligible for a 10% hard‑to‑fill adjustment in alignment with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
