Job summary

PLZ is seeking a sanitation technician to clean and sanitize intricate food manufacturing equipment in a high-risk environment. You will work with Maintenance and Quality to prevent contamination, adhering to GMP/HACCP, FDA rules, and strict PPE/LOTO safety protocols.

The role supports Lean initiatives and continuous improvement in sanitation methods. Successful candidates will handle CIP/COP systems familiarity, document sanitation steps, and maintain a clean, safe work environment on the plant

Qualifications

  • Experience with GMP, HACCP, and FDA regulatory requirements.
  • Prior sanitation experience in food/beverage/pharma industries preferred.
  • Familiarity with CIP/COP systems is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed cleaning and sanitizing of equipment per MSS and SDS.
  • Inspect for residues and contamination before and after cleaning.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance and Quality to resolve issues.
  • Follow LOTO, PPE, and safety procedures at all times.
  • Contribute to 5S and Lean activities.

Job description

Job Description / Key Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed cleaning and sanitizing of intricate and high-risk food manufacturing equipment, including fillers, conveyors, mixers, and packaging machinery.
  • Use approved cleaning agents, tools, and sanitation chemicals in accordance with label directions, safety data sheets (SDS), and company guidelines.
  • Follow master sanitation schedules (MSS) and verify all required documentation and checklists are completed accurately.
  • Inspect equipment and surrounding areas for residue, buildup, or contamination before and after cleaning.
  • Work collaboratively with Maintenance and Quality teams to identify and resolve issues such as product buildup, leaks, or potential contamination risks.
  • Use, maintain, and store sanitation tools and chemicals in an organized, safe manner according to plant procedures.
  • Understanding and adherence strictly to personal protective equipment (PPE) and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures when working with energized or hazardous systems.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by recommending better cleaning methods, tools, or processes to enhance efficiency and safety.
  • Participate in pre-op inspections and corrective actions as directed by Quality, Maintenance or Operations leadership.
  • Work with Operations to implement and maintain 5S and other Lean Manufacturing Activities as required.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), food safety standards (SQF standards), and company policies at all times.

Technical Skills
  • Light mechanical aptitude with ability to remove basic doors or non-fixed guarding to gain access to needed cleaning zones and reassemble safely and accurately.
  • Understanding of chemical handling, sanitation processes, and microbiological contamination risks in food manufacturing as well as proper disposal procedures.
  • Knowledge of GMPs, HACCP principles, and food safety regulatory requirements (FDA, etc.).
Attention to Detail
  • Ability to identify residues, buildup, or missed areas during inspection.
  • Precise documentation and verification of sanitation steps and results.
Safety and Compliance
  • Rigid adherence to LOTO, chemical safety, and relevant procedures.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
Teamwork and Communication
  • Communicates effectively with peers, maintenance, and quality personnel.
  • Takes initiative to alert supervisors to problems or improvements.
  • Self-start to complete tasks at hand as assigned by supervision and leadership
Physical Requirements
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in wet, humid, or cold environments.
  • Able to stand, bend, climb, and reach for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in food, beverage, or pharmaceutical sanitation preferred.
  • Familiarity with Clean-In-Place (CIP) and Clean-Out-of-Place (COP) systems.
  • Basic mechanical or technical training a plus.
