Job summary

Howard University in Washington, DC seeks an Associate Editor & Writer to research, interview, and develop engaging stories for Howard Magazine, The Dig, newsletters, annual reports, executive communications, and other print and digital platforms.

As a member of the Office of University Communications, you will transform complex information into accurate, accessible, and compelling content while supporting production, copyediting, and multimedia storytelling across university channels.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years of professional journalism, editorial writing, communications, publishing, or related work.
• Strong reporting, interviewing, research, writing, editing, and analytical skills.
• Ability to write features, profiles, news stories, and digital content for diverse audiences.
• Familiarity with AP style and digital publishing.

Responsibilities

• Research, interview, write, and revise news stories, profiles, features, and other editorial content for Howard Magazine, The Dig, newsletters, major event programs, and other content for the University’s digital platforms.
• Produce accurate and engaging content for print, web, email, social media, and multimedia audiences.
• Serve as a lead writer on research stories, translating complex information into compelling narratives that demonstrate impact and opportunity for the University.
• Complete assignments according to editorial calendars, production schedules, and deadlines.
• Identify and pitch timely story ideas based on events, priorities, and community developments.
• Translate complex academic information into clear and engaging narratives.
