Job summary

Special Olympics New York is seeking an Associate Director of Program - Competition to oversee program activities across the Long Island and New York City Regions. The role will coordinate training, competition, education, recruitment, and safety for athletes and volunteers.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree and experience in or with Developmental Disabilities, along with strong budgeting and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in a related field is desired.
• Experience in Developmental Disabilities as a coach or volunteer is preferred.
• Familiarity with NYC boroughs and Long Island neighborhoods a plus.

Responsibilities

• Support, coordinate and monitor all program-related activities in the Long Island & New York City Regions.
• Develop and administer program functions including training, competition, education, recruitment and safety for athletes and volunteers.
• Plan and implement competitions in Long Island Region and New York City Region.
• Lead several smaller competitions throughout the calendar year in both regions.
• Assist with major and signature events throughout the year in both regions.
• Recruit and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and volunteers in leadership positions.
• Ensure facilities are identified and secured for competitions and share educational materials on rules and protocols.
• Maintain budget and financial records; ensure compliance with SONY and governing bodies.

POSITION TITLE: Associate Director of Program - Competition

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

LOCATION: Downstate - NY, NY

REPORTS TO: Director of Program, Competition

COMPENSATION: $67,000 - $72,000

In Person/Remote Status: In-Person required 4 days a week minimum.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Bachelor Degree from an accredited college/university in Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation, Special Education, and/or related field or equivalent is desired. Experience working or volunteering in the field of Developmental Disabilities as a professional coach and/or Special Olympics volunteer is preferred. Familiarity with New York City boroughs and Long Island neighborhoods a plus.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with volunteers, professionals, and business people from various socio/economic backgrounds.
• A thorough understanding of the structure, function and mission of Special Olympics New York, including sports training, competition and program at the local, regional, state and national levels are required.
• Operating knowledge of the budgeting process, fund-raising and public relations are essential.
• Advanced computer, clerical and organizational skills necessary.
• A valid Driver’s License.

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for supporting, coordinating and monitoring all program related activities within the Long Island & New York City Regions. This includes Program developing and Program administration of all related functions including; training, competition, communication, education, recruitment and safety as they are relevant to Special Olympic athletes and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Planning and Implementation:

• Implement and monitor all program related operational procedures including regular accounting and an annual budget and planning process.
• Build, structure and monitor all program and training club activities.
• Support all Special Olympics activities associated with training, volunteer education and all new initiatives.
• Responsible for adherence to all program related SONY minimum standards.
• Act as the knowledgeable authority on matters related to sports training, athletic competition and coach education.
• Provide assistance and support in the planning and implementation of competitions in both the Long Island Region and New York City Region.
• Serve as the project leader for several smaller competitions throughout the calendar year in both the Long Island Region and New York City Region.
• Provide support in the execution of major and/or signature events throughout the calendar year in both the Long Island Region and New York City Region.
• Recruit and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and volunteers that hold leadership positions within the organization.
• Provide assistance with identifying individuals or groups who can provide aid in securing facilities for competition.
• Distribute and share any educational materials to officials, sports directors, and/or coaches and ensure that they understand up to date rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Maintain budget and keep financial records of all expenses.
• Insure the Region is in compliance with all regulations, general rules and policy originating from SONY, Inc., Special Olympics International and other 501 (c) 3 governing bodies.
• Engage and collaborate with athlete leaders and Health Messengers to support all health initiatives.
• Inclusion, Unified Sports and the Unified Champion School programming are present and prioritized in the foundation of our core elemental movement, found embedded in our seasonal and annual calendar, and activity. All program staff members hold responsibilities collaterally and fundamentally for inclusive mission and the Unified programming.

In addition to the responsibilities identified above, may be requested or required to perform other duties and/or responsibilities, by management on a non regular basis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position requires working both standing and sitting. Must be able to lift and carry light loads (5-30 pounds for short distances, approximately one block).

WORK HOURS:

Regular business hours are 9AM - 5PM. Travel assignments may be assigned. Weekend/evening duties required.
