Associate Director/Director, Intellectual Property (Patent Counsel)

Your experience includes
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school, admission to a state bar and in good standing and registered to practice before, and in good standing with, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • 6+ years of experience as an IP Counsel; some law firm experience required; additional in-house experience ideal.
  • Significant prior legal experience in the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology fields, with an emphasis on preparation, prosecution, and IP analysis, preferably directed to genetic medicines, nucleic acid therapies, and delivery technologies.
  • MS/PhD in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology or Biochemistry.
  • Excellent writing, analytical and communication skills, including demonstrated ability to provide specific, accurate, and concise advice to management (both written and verbal).
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and strong abilities to work in teams.
  • Strong prioritizing skills and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities concurrently, and quickly adjust to shifting priorities and timelines to deliver results.
  • Creative and strategic thinking; willingness to be bold and take risks; the ability to recognize and learn from failure; flexible, agile, personable, a team-oriented approach; an ability to think “out-of-the-box” and operate in a fast-paced, early stage, small company environment.

  • Working both independently and as part of a collaborative team to drive the expansion and development of an intellectual property estate to support Tessera Therapeutics' pioneering Gene Writing vision, with primary responsibility for IP landscape strategy, including assessment of third-party IP, and responsibility for innovation and technology patent filings.
  • Perform and advise teams on IP landscape, patentability, FTO, and due diligence assessments.
  • Participate in weekly interactions with Corporate Development and R&D to review IP landscape.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications directed to innovation and technology.
  • Partner with, and advise, Corporate Development across a range of contract matters (CDAs, MTAs, collaboration agreements, etc.), review proposed disclosures, and related activities.
  • Liaise with and oversee external legal counsel.
  • Maintain and manage licensing and patent related documents.

You are an experienced Patent Counsel who thrives working in a fast-paced, highly interactive environment with a broad range of intellectual property matters helping to build and maintain a strong IP portfolio, protecting a broad range of internal and in-licensed innovation and technology. You are excited about working closely with Scientists, Corporate Development, management, and outside counsel. You have excellent command of U.S. and international intellectual property laws and expertise in building complex patent estates for genetic medicines platforms and products. You are a driven, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who is comfortable multitasking and working independently on various aspects of the platform. You are interested in joining a dynamic, rapidly growing, and highly collaborative team.
