The City of Sacramento’s Department of Public Works, Transportation Division is seeking an Associate Engineer to work in the City’s Traffic Operation Section, which is a high-paced and dynamic work environment responsible for the operation, design, modification, and maintenance of the City’s traffic signals and related devices. The section's mission is to provide safe, efficient, and reliable mobility for all modes through the City’s transportation system. To support this mission, the section deploys various technologies and maintains a communication infrastructure to interconnect traffic signals. Under the general direction of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer will review, develop, implement, and approve traffic signal timing, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the traffic signal system. This role involves working on-site at traffic signals to program and troubleshoot traffic signal timing components and ITS elements.
The ideal candidate should have detailed knowledge of city, state, federal standards, MUTCD, and the California Vehicle Code. They should be able to work independently and be self-motivated, while effectively collaborating within a team. The candidate will have journey-level engineering experience involving:
To perform professional civil engineering work in planning, design, investigation, and construction of public works, transportation, hydraulics, and structural projects.
Assistant Civil Engineer: Entry-level, non-registered, performing moderately difficult engineering work. Usually promoted to Associate Civil Engineer with experience and registration.
Associate Civil Engineer: Full journey-level requiring registration, capable of handling complex assignments independently, supervising others, and interpreting policies.
Supervision is provided by a higher-level engineer or division head. Responsibilities may include supervising lower-level staff.
Knowledge of: Principles of civil engineering, construction methods, current literature.
Ability to: Perform complex computations, communicate clearly, use engineering tools effectively.
One year of professional civil engineering experience and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or possession of an EIT certificate. Registration as a Professional Engineer in California is required for the Associate level.
Must submit proof of education and licensure at the time of appointment. Non-U.S. degrees must be evaluated.
