Job description

Beeson, Tayer & Bodine is a progressive, 15-attorney law firm dedicated to championing unions, workers, and benefit plans since 1936. With offices in Oakland and Sacramento, we present public- and private-sector unions, educators, employee benefit plans, and individual employees across the full spectrum of union-side labor and employment law.

We are seeking an Associate Attorney for our Oakland or Sacramento office, available to start immediately. This position focuses on our Education practice.

As part of our commitment to workplace democracy, our associate attorneys have recently organized and ratified their first collective bargaining agreement. This process reflects our values and our long-standing support for worker empowerment.

Our attorneys represent California Teachers Association members in a variety of legal matters, including Education Code disciplinary actions before the Office of Administrative Hearings, credentialing matters before the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and disputes with employer Districts regarding issues of pay, classification, disability accommodation, layoffs, leaves, transfers, tort claims, et al., in addition to providing advice and counsel on a wide-range of other employment-related issues to such members directly. Each attorney is responsible for handling the intake and handling of approximately 20-30 cases per month.

Ideal candidates will have 2-10 years of experience and must be admitted to the California Bar. In addition to strong academic credentials, excellent writing, and effective oral advocacy skills, candidates must share our commitment to the labor movement and workers’ rights. While union-side experience is a plus, we also welcome applicants with backgrounds in plaintiffs’ employment law or public interest work. Completion of labor and employment law coursework is expected.

We are looking for a motivated self-starter with excellent judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must hold a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and be active, in good standing, with the California Bar.

We offer a competitive salary and generous benefits in a collaborative, mission-driven workplace. For attorneys with 3-5 years of experience, the salary range is $113,000-$125,000, depending on office and commensurate with experience. Our benefits package includes:
