Job summary

Governor Morehead School for the Blind is seeking an Assistive Technology Teacher to provide specialized instruction and support in assistive technology for visually impaired students. Qualifications

Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Assistive Technology Teacher is primarily responsible to the Principal of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) for providing specialized instruction, consultation, and support in assistive technology for students with visual impairments. This position focuses on equipping students with the technology skills, tools, and strategies necessary to access the curriculum, develop independence, and prepare for postsecondary education, employment, and independent living. The Assistive Technology Teacher collaborates within instructional staff, related service providers, families, and external agencies to ensure appropriate selection, implementation, and effective use of assistive technology aligned with students’ individualized needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Follow all School Board and GMS policies and procedures.
• Provide direct instruction to students in the use of assistive technology to support access to the curriculum and daily tasks.
• Provide direct instruction to students in the use of word processing, slide presentations, spreadsheets, and other productivity apps.
• Conduct assistive technology assessments and contribute recommendations to IEPs and instructional planning.
• Train students in the use of screen readers, braille technology, magnification devices, accessible software, and emerging technologies.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate assistive technology into instruction and classroom routines.
• Provide consultation, coaching, and technical support to staff regarding accessibility and assistive technology implementation.
• Support students in developing independence, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills related to technology use.
• Maintain accurate records related to assessments, services, equipment use, and student progress.
• Assist with selection, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of assistive technology devices and software.
• Coordinate with families, vendors, and outside agencies regarding assistive technology needs and services.
• Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, professional development, and school-based committees as required.
• Stay current with emerging assistive technologies and best practices in the field of visual impairment.
• Adhere to district policies, procedures, and the North Carolina Code of Ethics for Educators.
• Support and uphold the mission, vision, and values of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind.
• Other duties as assigned by the administration.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Special Education, Visual Impairment, Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

• Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Visual Impairment (K–12) or Special Education, with demonstrated expertise in assistive technology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Possess a valid North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Visual Impairment (K–12).
• Formal training or certification in Assistive Technology.
• Experience working in a school setting serving students who are blind or visually impaired.
• Experience collaborating on IEP teams and conducting assistive technology assessments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Strong knowledge of assistive technology tools and software for individuals with visual impairments, including screen readers, magnification software, braille note-taking devices, and accessible mobile technology.
• In-depth understanding of instructional strategies for students who are blind or visually impaired.
• Ability to assess student needs and recommend appropriate assistive technology solutions.
• Knowledge of accessibility standards, digital accessibility, and universal design for learning.
• Ability to teach students to use assistive technology to access academic content, assessments, and daily living tasks.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, related service providers, administrators, families, and community partners.
• Ability to provide professional development and coaching to staff on assistive technology and accessibility.
• Ability to monitor student safety and well-being while using technology and adaptive equipment.
• Friendly and able to interact professionally and positively with staff, students, parents, and community members.
• Ability to multi-task while prioritizing the most critical duties.
• Strong technology skills including use of PowerPoint, Excel, Word, email, text, phone, and other common workplace applications or tools.
