Job summary

The Town of Barre is seeking an Assistant Water Operator to help oversee daily operations of the water distribution system and the collection/pumping of domestic and commercial wastes. You will assist in maintaining pumps, motors, valves and related equipment, and help ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Qualifications include a high school diploma and a valid driver's license; Vermont water operator certification is preferred.

  • Public Water System Operator Certification is desired but not required.
  • Must begin working toward obtaining Class 4 and D Water Operator license within the first year; obtain Class B CDL with tank endorsement by end of year.

Job description

The Town of Barre is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as an Assistant Water Operator. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with overseeing the daily operations of the water distribution system and the collection/pumping of domestic and commercial wastes. They will also be involved in installing, maintaining, and repairing machinery equipment, physical structures, and pipe and electrical systems related to water and wastewater facilities.

This position requires assistance in monitoring and maintaining the water distribution system to ensure proper operation and compliance with regulatory standards. Assist in operating and maintaining pumps, motors, valves, and other equipment used in water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Assist in conducting routine inspections of facilities and equipment to identify and address any maintenance or repair needs. Assist in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues as they arise. Assist in water quality testing and analysis as required by regulatory agencies. Assist in emergency response situations, such as water main breaks or sewer overflows, to mitigate risks and restore service. Assist in maintaining accurate records of daily operations, maintenance activities, and water quality data.

Minimum qualifications are high school diploma or equivalent; valid driver's license; additional technical training or certification in water/wastewater operations preferred. Previous experience in water/wastewater operations or a related field is desirable. Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. The employee must have the ability to move medium (25-50 lb.) materials frequently, and the ability to move heavy (over 100 lbs.) on occasion. State of Vermont Public Water System Operator Certification is desired but not required. A successful candidate MUST begin working towards obtaining both a Class 4 and D Water Operator License within the first year of employment and obtain a Class B CDL License w/tank endorsement before the end of the first year of employment.

Usual hours are M-F, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Overtime is required, including nighttime, weekend and holiday work, depending on weather, and emergencies. The starting hourly rate is $32.49 per hour. A higher starting wage is possible depending on the amount of related experience.
