About the Role
Hinterland is looking for an AVP, Operations to lead underwriting operations across our DIC and Commercial underwriting teams. Reporting to the VP of Operations and working closely with the CUO and EVP of Underwriting, you will turn underwriting strategy into scalable, repeatable operations, and you will lead the Operations Specialists and Senior Operations Specialist who keep our submission, renewal, and issuance workflows moving.
You will own the processes, platforms, and reporting that help underwriting scale, and continuously remove bottlenecks along the way. You will partner closely with the Manager, Compliance & Loss Control, who owns authority administration, compliance controls, outsourcing oversight, and loss control coordination.
Responsibilities
- Translate underwriting strategy from the CUO and EVP of Underwriting into operating plans, priorities, and measurable goals for the operations team.
- Oversee rate and pricing guidance, including minimum property rates, debits and credits, wind/hail, wildfire, ITV standards, and GL pricing, ensuring changes are configured correctly and clearly communicated.
- Own the DIC and Commercial renewal workflows, including renewal lists with proposed rate changes, leadership review before release, and tracking of progress and feedback.
- Own and continuously improve renewal, issuance, and endorsement SOPs across both divisions, and oversee handoffs with the outsourcing partner.
- Lead, coach, and develop the Operations Specialists and Senior Operations Specialist, setting clear expectations, workload priorities, and performance goals.
- Own submission routing and underwriter assignment logic, and oversee capacity planning and workload balancing across teams.
- Oversee development and review of coverage forms, endorsements, and processes, and maintain carrier placement guidance.
- Own the submission and rating platforms (rules, assignment logic, access, testing), manage key vendor and tool relationships, and coordinate with the CIO on broader system needs.
- Own Rater360 changes, including rate, rule, and form updates, with testing and validation before release, version control, and clear communication of changes to underwriting and the outsourcing partner.
- Coordinate carrier audits of delegated underwriting authority, including audit preparation, file selection and support, responses to findings, and tracking of corrective actions to completion.
- Oversee timely completion of required validations and quality checks, and maintain documentation of results for audit and carrier reporting.
- Own operational KPIs and SLAs, such as turnaround times, backlog, quote-to-bind, and error rates, and manage the performance of the outsourcing partner against them.
- Maintain data integrity across underwriting workflows and own management dashboards that support oversight of retention, pricing, and operational performance.
- Monitor operational reports, such as policy issuance and subjectivity tracking, and drive timely follow-up and resolution of outstanding items.
- Own the procedure library and lead change management for guidelines, rates, and forms, including training and onboarding, QA and peer review, and rollouts of new programs, states, carriers, and systems.
Qualifications
- Substantial commercial property and general liability underwriting operations experience, ideally within an E&S MGA, wholesaler, or carrier environment.
- Strong working knowledge of the underwriting lifecycle (intake, rating, quoting, binding, issuance, endorsements, renewals) and of delegated authority and referral processes.
- Proven experience leading and developing teams, building SOPs and workflows, and managing many concurrent workstreams.
- Experience administering underwriting submission and rating platforms and using BI tools to produce management reporting.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with senior leadership.
- Familiarity with Difference in Conditions programs is a plus but not required.
