Description
SUMMARY:

The person in this position leads and directs employees under divisional responsibility to ensure proper maintenance of equipment; develops and facilitates safety, training, and mentoring of all divisional mechanical employees under the position's jurisdiction; ensures compliance with all OSHA regulations and G&W safety rules for Mechanical Department employees; and meets department safety and budgetary goals. He or she represents G&W as a responsible corporate citizen to the public; protects the environment according to G&W policy and appropriate state and federal law; manages the maintenance and repair of freight cars to meet AAR, FRA, and company standards and to reduce life-cycle cost and increase availability. Ability to build financial business plans for long-term growth strategies, for internal car repair shops and contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration.
  • Promote, maintain, and audit G&W safety policies; maintain records pertaining to employee safety, safety training, accidents, injuries, and G&W directives; perform and promote proper job briefings; and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and G&W safety rules as required.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance, repair, and periodic maintenance cycles are completed properly and in a timely manner by all regional Mechanical Department employees.
  • Comply with all OSHA, FRA, AAR, and G&W maintenance standards and their associated requirements for record retention.
  • Meet regional, daily, and monthly equipment availability-and-reliability goals.
  • Review and develop correct fleet size for the division to optimize fleet size, maintenance costs, and utilization.
  • Be responsible for budget process; assist in developing capital plan and management of such budget.
  • Define and implement mechanical preventative maintenance practices within G&W guidelines to increase availability and reduce life-cycle costs.
  • Manage the overall divisional mechanical operation to maintain a safe, clean, and efficient work environment, ensuring safe handling and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste.
  • Assist in new-hire interviews and the selection process.
  • Mentor junior supervisors and employees to reach their full potential.
  • Manage other projects and perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Thorough working knowledge of all FRA and AAR rules and regulations pertaining to equipment safety, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Good computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste.
  • Ability to manage and supervise hourly and salaried employees.
  • Ability to understand oral or written instructions and execute them to achieve desired results.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to maintain good working relationships with other department heads and supervisors.
  • Support overall environmental activities for the Midwest Division.
  • Support the Midwest Division railroads to ensure environmental compliance with applicable government regulations as well as internal standards, policies, and requirements.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
  • Associate degree or technical certification in a related field.
  • Five years of experience successfully managing car and locomotive assets.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree or at least five years of experience successfully managing car and locomotive assets preferred.
