Job summary

The City of Bessemer is seeking a Utilities Assistant Operations Manager to support the Utilities Operations Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Utilities Department, which provides water and electric services to more than 40,000 customers.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, coordinating projects, promoting workplace safety, and collaborating with internal departments to maintain reliable and efficient utility services.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited university or college.
• Experience supervising employees, including performance appraisals and disciplinary actions.
• Experience in a utility setting following safety and regulatory guidelines.
• Experience managing distribution projects and coordinating with engineers.
• Experience planning safety and training sessions.
• Experience monitoring an annual budget and preparing bidding specs.

Responsibilities

• Provides operational leadership across electric and water utility functions, ensuring high service standards and compliance.
• Assists in budget preparation, monitoring expenditures, and aligning spending with goals.
• Directs planning, execution, and evaluation of utility projects and system upgrades.
• Oversees staff; assigns work, coaches, and ensures policy adherence.
• Leads staff training programs on equipment, safety, and service standards.
• Develops policies and goals to improve efficiency, safety, and preparedness.
• Collaborates with departments, stakeholders, and regulators to resolve issues and drive projects.
• Assesses tools and resources to maintain safety and efficiency in field operations.
• Keeps abreast of industry best practices and regulations to guide improvements.
• Represents the department in industry and community meetings.
