Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Columbus, OH, seeks an Assistant Transmission Engineer to support project teams in designing high voltage transmission lines (69-500 kV). You’ll assist from concept through design, adapting drawings and plans under licensed engineer supervision, and participate in field measurements and reviews.

The role emphasizes teamwork, problem solving, and strong communication. ABET preferred degree with internship experience and EIT is a plus; full-time on-site position with travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Eng from an accredited program (ABET preferred).
• Internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in problem solving.
• Proficient with MS Office Suite.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS/PLS-CADD, RISA-3D or MathCADD.
• Strong attention to detail, teamwork and organization.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA preferred.
• Campus or community involvement preferred.
• Authorized to work permanently in the location.

Responsibilities

• Assist transmission line design from conceptual to design completion.
• Modify and review production drawings for 69-500 kV lines.
• Design line components per project manager requirements including plans and profiles.
• Apply basic civil/structural engineering concepts and codes.
• Research and compile project data and studies as required.
• Update drawings in CAD software under supervision.
• Support client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration.
• Assist in field inspections, measurements, or calculations for clients.
• Perform other duties and comply with policies and standards.
