Job summary

Town of Oro Valley seeks a prosecuting attorney to lead criminal and civil prosecution in the Oro Valley Town Court and related venues. Under the Town Attorney, you will coordinate cases, research legal matters, prepare opinions, and appear in court to handle proceedings.

The role requires JD with Arizona licensure and at least two years of criminal prosecution experience, with strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with police, attorneys and staff.

Full Salary Range: $104,453 - $156,680

Expected Hiring Range: $104,453 - $130,566

Starting Salary Depending on Experience and Qualifications

Under the direction of the Town Attorney, engages and prosecutes civil and misdemeanor violations in the Oro Valley Town Court and other courts as necessary.

• Conducts legal research and prepares legal reports, papers and opinions.
• Appears in courts to administer criminal prosecution.
• Participates in creating plea offer and other lists for the office.
• Applies extensive knowledge, skills and abilities in carrying out broad operations, projects and work assignments.
• Meets with the Court, attorneys, victims, defendants, civilians, witnesses and police officers and police administration and staff to discuss matters pertaining to criminal law.
• Participates in prosecution investigation, file review, charging, dismissals, case preparation, trial work, appeals and legislative analysis.
• Plans, organizes, implements and seeks alternative approaches to prosecution activities and administrative functions.
• Prepares and provides training related to prosecution activities for police officers and other prosecutors and staff.
• Works with and oversees daily prosecution work of assigned staff.
• Responsible for maintaining professional licensing, including attending CLE hours and attendance at professional organization events.
• Reviews legislation and professional articles affecting criminal prosecution.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of applicable Town, state and Federal statutes, rules, ordinances, codes and regulations governing municipal law and prosecution matters.
• Knowledge of judicial procedures, rules of evidence and methods of legal research.
• Knowledge of personal computer hardware and software. Ability to use computers in a courtroom setting.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Town and Department policies and procedures.
• Skill in gathering, analyzing and organizing facts and evidence.
• Skill in interpreting laws, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Skill in performing varied duties requiring many different and unrelated approaches and methods applied to a broad range of activities requiring a substantial depth of analysis.
• Skill in preparing court documents and legal opinions.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

• A Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Two (2) years’ experience in criminal prosecution.
• Must possess at time of application and maintain throughout the term of employment in this position, a license to practice law in the state of Arizona.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Work is mostly performed in an indoor environment but may have incidental outdoor assignments.
• Regular and reliable attendance; may work remotely with permission; may work more than forty hours in a workweek without additional compensation to perform assigned job duties, including weekends, evenings, early morning hours, and holidays as required.
