Job Description

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Assistant Theatre & Events Manager plays a pivotal role in advancing VPCC’s mission by supporting the day-to-day operations of the Dr. Mary T. Christian Theatre, overseeing facility rentals and reservations, and providing event assistance for the Education Foundation. This position blends theatre management, rental coordination, and event logistics into one dynamic portfolio, requiring an energetic and highly organized professional who can balance multiple priorities with ease.

The Assistant Theatre & Events Manager will work closely with the Theatre Manager to ensure seamless productions and performances, manage rental requests and client relations with professionalism, and contribute to the success of donor and community events hosted by the Education Foundation. The role demands a collaborative, customer-focused individual who thrives in fast-paced environments and is committed to delivering exceptional experiences for students, donors, patrons, and community partners.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of techniques and methods (computerized and manual) of stage, lighting, projection, and sounds installation and operation for staging college events and theatrical performances
  • Working knowledge of electronics, stage equipment and rigging, and audio-visual media
  • Working knowledge of CAD, Vectorworks, and QLab or other sound operation software
  • Working knowledge of theatrical carpentry, set, and lighting design
  • Working knowledge of costume and/or sound design
  • Thorough knowledge of front-of-house and ticketing operations and procedures
  • General knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of technical theater tools and equipment
  • General knowledge and use of proper lifting techniques.

Required

Additional Considerations
  • Degree in Theatre, Arts Management, Project/Event Management, Business Management, or related field
  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit event management
  • Working knowledge of theatrical production processes, including stage management, lighting, and sound.
  • Experience managing rental contracts, billing systems, and vendor relationships.
  • Familiarity with AV/IT systems.
