Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor or Teacher, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting in the operation of their classroom in accordance with all applicable policies and regulations.

Key Areas Of Responsibilities And Duties

- Program Services/Operations (87%)
- Responsible to assist supervisor in the day-to-day operations of the center including, planning, carrying out activities, maintaining the classroom environment, supervising children, parent/teacher conferences, guidance of classroom volunteers and overall maintenance of center
- Responsible for implementation of area plans
- Responsible for maintaining compliance with Performance Standards, Community Care Licensing and State Regulations
- Responsible for compliance with screening and assessment requirements
- Educational Curriculum (8%)
- Assists supervisor in implementing program curriculum, ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and other regulations
- Works with supervisor in the development of curriculum, classroom environments and development of education forms including lesson plans, assists supervisor in implementing program curriculum, ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and other regulations

- Employee Development (5%)
- Responsible for completing self-appraisals and ensuring appropriate time frames are met
- Completes an annual professional growth plan, maintains requirements needed for Child Development Permit (Assistant level)
- Promotes team collaboration with all staff at center
- Attends trainings as directed by supervisor
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Early Childhood Education (ECE), 9 units preferably core courses
- Some experience working with young children
- Child Development Assistant Teacher permit required within six months of hire
- Preventative Health and Safety Certificate
- Current CPR and First Aid
Skills
- Have experience working effectively with minority and low-income families and adults at all levels of the socioeconomic structure of the community
- Possess knowledge of the needs of rural children and their families
- Interacts with children and is able to relate to them in a supportive and non-judgmental way in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards
- Be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written or oral form
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide - compute percentages
- Ability to express, exchange ideas in proper English (bilingual preferred - Spanish/English) and work cooperatively with staff, clients, and community from varied backgrounds and experiences
- Possess the ability to read a variety of materials such as work procedures and safety rules. Write reports, record observations, and document conversations with proper spelling, grammar, and format
- Capability to meet deadlines and work under tight-time schedules
- Must portray a positive attitude towards children, families, and staff
- Capacity to function as a team player/member
- Ability to react with flexibility and sensitivity to changing situations and needs

Required Physical Activities
- Must be agile enough to perform the job of teaching small children: able to walk, run, climb, bend, reach, etc.
- Be able to stand for up to 7 hours at a time and sit for up to one hour at a time
- Lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds
Special Requirements
- Criminal background clearance as required by licensing agency
- Physical Examination, proof of current negative TB test, immunizations (measles, pertussis Tdap) required by Community Care Licensing and current influenza shot.
- Valid California Driver's License and proof of current automobile insurance coverage
- Willingness to work irregular hours, attend night meetings, and travel as required by the organization
