Job summary

Malcolm X College in Chicago is seeking an Assistant Teacher-CDC (2nd) to support the Child Development Center's developmentally appropriate curriculum for preschool children. Under supervision of the Teacher, you will assist with classroom activities, supervise children, and help implement activities aligned with program goals.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma with college coursework in child development, at least one year of experience with young children, and is pursuing Gateways

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit from an accredited college or university, with 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours in courses related to Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field from birth to age six.
• Minimum of one year of work experience with young children birth to 5 years.
• Illinois Gateways to Opportunity registration and pursuing Level 4 credential in Infant/Toddler or Early Childhood Education.
• Must have and maintain a warm, supportive attitude towards children.
• Able to communicate verbally and in writing with children, parents, and staff; document growth and learning.

Malcolm X College is currently seeking an Assistant Teacher-Secondary for the Child Development Center Department.

The Child Development Laboratory Schools will lead the Cityof Chicago in providing high-quality, comprehensive programs, aswell as demonstration and training sites that serve faculty,students, and children of college staff and the greater Chicagocommunity. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Under the supervision of the Teacher – Child Development Center,and in addition to a primary Assistant Teacher-Child DevelopmentCenter in the classroom, the Assistant Teacher – Child DevelopmentCenter (2nd) provides instructional, clerical and non-instructionalsupport in the Child Development Center classroom, in order toimplement a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is alignedwith the educational and philosophical goals of the program.Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Adheres to the National Association for the Education of YoungChildren (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct, demonstrating aprofessional attitude and work ethic, and respect for children,families, and colleagues.
• Provides a safe, healthy environment for children, with a focuson classroom health, hygiene, nutrition, and safety. This includesmaintaining a clean and orderly environment for children; ensuringchildren attend to personal hygiene/hand washing; teaching childrenabout health and nutrition; and reporting accidents, injuries, andillnesses to parents and supervisors.
• Assists the teacher and primary Assistant Teacher-CDC in thedevelopment and implementation of an environment and curriculumthat provides for a variety of developmentally appropriateactivities to promote children’s development in the areas oflanguage and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, andphysical health. Meets with the teachers to discuss and considerthe Center’s goals, educational philosophy, and general curriculumplans.
• Ensures children’s safety through constant supervision, storageof dangerous materials, arrangement and maintenance of classroomand equipment.
• Works with other teaching staff to provide a nurturing,stimulating, non-punitive, and culturally sensitive environmentthat encourages language, self-expression, exploration, creativity,imaginative play, thinking skills, and the development of positiverelationships.
• Participates in any quality enhancement initiatives that thecenter may undertake.
• Participates in staff meetings, planning, and professionaldevelopment and shares information gained from coursework orattendance at professional development workshops andconferences.
• Adheres to requirements put forth by funding, licensing, andaccreditation agencies.
• Performs other duties as required and maintains classroomatmosphere and requirement in the absence of the regularteacher.
• Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent plus 30 semester hours or 45quarter hours of credit from an accredited college or university,with 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours in courses directlyrelated to Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or arelated field from birth to age six (6).
• A minimum of one year of work experience working with youngchildren birth to 5 years required. Attainment of Illinois Gatewaysto Opportunity Level 2 Early Childhood Education or Infant/ToddlerCredential within one year of hire.
• Candidate must be registered with Illinois Gateways toOpportunity and actively pursuing their Level 4 credential inInfant/Toddler (IT) or Early Childhood Education (ECE).
• Must have and maintain a warm, supportive attitude towardschildren.
• Must be flexible in receiving assignments and adapting to changesin the program.
• Must be willing to accept supervision and continue professionaldevelopment in the field in order to improve workperformance.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with children,parents, and other staff members, as well as for documentingchildren’s growth and learning.
• Should be able to assist in the creation and implementation ofdevelopmentally appropriate lessons, interact positively withchildren and other staff, and understand and attend to thephysical, social, cognitive, health and safety, and emotional needsof the children.
• Must be able to work well within a culturally diverse environmentwith the ability to handle situations with tact anddiplomacy.
• Ability to operate computers and use applicable softwarerequired.

SALARY RANGE: $46,942 - $51,636.20

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collectivebargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience,knowledge, skills and abilities.
