Position Summary

Hamilton-Madison House’s Early Childhood Services is seeking an Assistant Teacher (AT) for our Early Childhood Program, which serves children between the ages of 3-5 years old. We are looking for a warm, responsible, dedicated teacher who is sensitive to the needs of young children and their families and can work well with others. The AT collaborates with the Group Teacher to create and implement a developmentally-appropriate curriculum that meets the needs and interests of the children. The AT assists in supervising the children at all times. The position reports to the Education Director.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma plus CDA credential or AA in Early Childhood Education with one year of teaching experience with children aged 3-5
• Assistant Teacher Certification
• Bilingual in English/Asian language preferred
• Ability to work positively and patiently with children, parents, and staff
• Proficient in MS Office and related technologies

Responsibilities

1. Interaction with Children: Engage affectionately and respectfully, communicate calmly, and model social behavior.
2. Physical Environment & Safety: Supervise children, maintain records, ensure a safe environment, and understand mandated reporting responsibilities.
3. Physical Demands: Ability to stand, bend, and perform activities with children, with good hearing and visual capabilities.
4. Curriculum Support: Assist in creating and implementing developmentally appropriate activities, document children's progress, and use community resources.
5. Faculty/Parent Interaction: Communicate effectively, respect confidentiality, and respond to concerns sensitively.
6. Teamwork & Professionalism: Collaborate with colleagues, participate in meetings, and maintain confidentiality and professional growth.

Compensation

$31,601 (High School Diploma), $35,494 (Bachelor Degree). Salary based on credentials with DC 37 Local 95. Union position with benefits.

Hours

Monday to Friday, 8:30AM to 4:30PM, 35 hours/week.
